Progress is used to conquer the unconquerable. Progress is to control nature and to manipulate it for personal benefits, not to be at nature’s mercy. Progress gives people the opportunity to move up the social ladder and to be wealthy while giving them more leisure time to spend with their family. Many people may say through progress (especially in technology) is essential for a society in order for the society to survive in an ever changing world. Although many argue that progress is vital to society, it should be considered at what cost and sacrifice does one make in the …show more content…
Progress has turned people away from nature and nature has been destroyed in the name of progress. In recent years, many people made a great effort to improve technology and its efficiency, which enabled many people to pursue careers in the non agricultural field. For instance, a farmer equipped with a pesticides, fertilizers and a tractor is able to do work faster and efficiently in turn enabling them to work in large fields with minimum labor without facing any major problems. Due to the lack of farmers need to meet the demand of the market, many people have been able to pursue and branch out into other fields such as business, science and art. Therefore, many people lack the knowledge of how to properly take care of the land they live in and how to grow food. As Mason writes, “I think this dependence on nature was at the core for my rebellion” (Mason 82). Mason argues how many people did not like the dependency on nature which caused them to use technology to manipulate nature or to use it to mimic nature’s conditions. For example, in the past people were able to tell how much rainfall would be expected yearly and when the first frost would end the harvest/growing season. …show more content…
In the past, people spend more time communicating with their neighbors and their friends. Now people are busy with their smartphones and working in small areas behind a desk where they continually check their email, text and social media just to know how their friend are. As Sale writes, “Progress a “comfortable disease” of modern mankind, and so it has been for some.” (Sale 693). Sale argues how the progress is a two sided sword, it could potentially be good, but could cause more harm if not handled incorrectly. As the availability and accessibility of the internet expand and become easier to search, people do not need to care about befriending anyone anymore. For example, if a person is in need of a ride they could “pull out” their smartphone and use an app to get a ride at a discounted rate. While in the past people usually build relationship with taxi/other drivers in order to gain their trust and get on demand ride sometimes in at a discounted rate. If an individual’s car breaks down, he could just do a quick search using the internet to find hundreds of repair shops with reviews from customers, enabling him to “cherry pick” which one to use to repair the car. While in the past the individual would usually go to a family/friend trusted repair shop for good service. If an individual need a loaf of bread he could just go to the local grocery store or a corner store to buy one.

Trapped by the consequences of their own development, humans will desperately look for new ways to counteract factors which stand in the way of either further development, or the viability of the altered society. An example of a factor that would lead to this situation would be full utilization of a resource that was not exploited previously by humans, such as what is being seen in modern oil and gas extraction. As a result, society will try to develop a new technological “saving grace” to ensure the survival of constantly progressing society. Agriculture is described as a “progress trap” because agronomic advances have lessened the human reliance on the provisions of the natural environment, and to instead…

Heat exchange devises warm where it is cold and cool where it is hot. We can make water flow in deserts and create breathable atmospheres in the vacuum of space” (Ornstein and Ehrlich 44). The Idea of Isolation and Containment As days pass by, the relationship between the people and nature are becoming very complicated because people in our society care no more about what is going on with nature instead they care more about how they could take the advantages of it. The internet is a medium of virtually instantaneous and largely unrestrained ideas. Social media has made it possible for people around the world to connect to an extent never previously possible. Its ease of access, among other reasons, has resulted in people using the internet to create relationships through cyberspace, rather than to create them through real-life, face-to-face contact. The human race, however, seems predisposed to engaging in habits which have negative personal consequences, such as becoming dependent on alcohol, drugs, gambling, and now the internet. People have an innate powerful drive to connect to others, and both Dave Eggers in The Circle, as well as Joshua Ferris in To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, highlight the dangers…
