This study is also referred to as ‘burden of illness’.
This method identifies and estimates the overall cost of a particular disease for a defined population. It measures the direct costs of treatment (cost of medications, laboratory costs) and indirect costs (physician’s fee, travelling charges, hospitalization charges). The economic burden on patient can be determined in terms of costs (cost / month or cost / year ), in a defined population with specific disease. It helps to find out the relative value of a treatment, relative value of a prevention strategy and the cost of a particular disease. for example: cost of illness of diabetes patients, Cost of illness of stroke patients.
