The cost of treating unintentional poisoning injury was estimated based on NHS reference costs for hospital services obtained from PSSRU Unit Costs of Health and Social Care 2012 (Curtis 2012). In the model, it was assumed that all medically reported cases of unintentional poisoning are taken to the emergency department for initial assessment and or treatment. In the emergency department, cases are triaged as minor requiring no inpatient stay, moderate requiring short inpatient admission or severe requiring long inpatient admission.
