Cost Of Freedom In America

Freedom is never given, it must be demanded. This statement is debated all around the world. It focuses on not only political freedom, but social and personal as well. Many important American figures have spoken about the topic, such as President Obama and Martin Luther King, Jr. If freedom was given, segregation never would have taken place and men in the military wouldn't be fighting for their rights.

Slavery was in America for over two hundred years. Even after it ended, African Americans were discriminated against. They fought long and hard to be free of segregation. At no point in time was freedom given to them. "No, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream" (King). Martin Luther King, Jr. addresses the fact that white people took away freedom from other people. It wasn't until negroes demanded freedom, however, that they received what they deserved.

However, even though everyone has certain natural rights and freedoms in America, other countries still have to demand their freedoms. "'I want to make sure that no girl out there is denied her chance to be a strong, capable woman with the resources that she needs to succeed - that no girl is prevented from making her unique contributions to the world,' President Obama said" (McClatchy Washington Bureau). This article discusses a new program to help girls receive an education where they do not have the freedom to do so.
