The history of cosplay subculture is fairly recent and has a surprising origin as most of the population connects cosplay with Japanese animation, or anime. Cosplay originated in the United State at World Con in 1939 with a man named Forrest J. Ackerman. This is the first recorded instance of cosplay though the term cosplay would not be used for many years (Mikolaski). Forrest’s cosplay was a science fiction piece created by himself to share the passion he had for the convention that was geared towards futuristic goals. The most well-known type of cosplay is the realistic cosplay. These cosplayers make every detail count and create each piece to a very precise standard. Second is the “crossplayers.” This group typically dresses and the opposite sex of their own or change the sex of the character being portrayed. The “mekas” are third and have large pieces that spent months to build and resemble large robots. Lastly, the “dolliers” wear masks that have the typical features of anime and manga characters. This groups contains a secondary group called “furries.” Furries have large fur covered costumes that resemble animals (Cairdiuil).
