Are you a perfectionist, do you care about your looks? Have you ever imagined owning your own salon? Well I do! Do you daydream about doing makeup for the big stars? Cosmetology School teaches the science and theory behind cosmetology and the basic techniques for caring of the hair, nails, and skin. Experience is just as important in business as education, many positions require a bachelor’s degree just to get a foot in the door. Retail owners need good business sense and strong customer service with public relation skills. Cosmetologists held about 628,000 different jobs as of this year, self-employed cosmetologists usually work longer hours. Starting off with becoming a licensed cosmetologist, you must complete an undergraduate course of 1,050-2,200 hours of classroom credit hours. (Careers in Focus Cosmetology, 70). Average earnings for a cosmetologist just starting out at $12,000 - $13,000 per year. Increase to about $20,000 a year as soon as they have established clientele. (Gearhart, 110-11). Some makeup artists make a living simply by working in cosmetic stores. At higher levels, skilled makeup artists are in demand to prepare models for fashion shoots and run way shows. Most Business careers require a bachelor’s degree at minimum, but as competition for high-level position intensify, having a master’s of business administration is a valuable asset. After you get you’re education in business, you have to deal with internships, recruiters, resumes, jobs, interviews, contract negotiations. Then once you get the job, there is your performance to consider, it is always a good idea to seek out as much information and advice as possible. (“Career Information and Advice for Business Professionals” businessmajors, 10 Sept. 2014). For a cosmetologist the opportunities are better because you work on your own terms. The salary is higher depending on what you do, and you typically create your own salary. The education is less abundant than business. You could be done with the education for cosmetology, establish a new salon and clientele before you even get done you’re education for a business major.
