Cosmetology Personal Statement

I am a first generation high school graduate, and university attendant. I am the eldest of four children, and growing up going to college was not a big priority. The expectation was to get a high school degree and go to a trade school. Well, I did just that, as soon as I graduated high school I enrolled in to cosmetology school. I had always wanted to learn to be a hair stylist or esthetician, since I was fifteen. I thought I could help people to feel good about themselves and their outward appearance. However, I had a bigger passion for skin, and when it came time to decide whether I wanted to do cosmetology or esthetics, I had a difficult time choosing a profession. I ultimately went for the cosmetology license because you could perform both …show more content…
I ask a friend who was already in college to help me enroll. The first two semesters of college were great I had a 4.0 GPA and was enrolling in honor societies. I could not have been more proud of myself for coming this far and doing so well. However, in my third semester in college at 21 years old, I started to experience tremors in my hands and the problems from there escalated. I did not have insurance; thankfully, even though I did not have insurance I worked in an urgent care where the doctors would see the employees free of charge. Sure enough, I was on the verge of a thyroid storm and my heart rate was out of control. I started medication immediately and they gave me the name of a doctor to make an appointment with, but I did not have the money or time to make the money to see this doctor because I was in school. After tough semester up trying to keep up with school, work, and my disease, I finally realized I need to take a semester off from school to make money to regain my health. After a long, arduous process of regaining my health my thyroid finally was ablated, and I was ready to resume …show more content…
However, school is one of the most important aspects of my life and nothing should get in the way of my goals. Nevertheless, without my health I could not work through school effectively; I could not maintain a job to support myself if I did not have my health. This disease helped me to see that even though school is a major aspect in my life, it is not the only aspect in my life. I first have to take care of my well-being before I can take care of others. In addition, I also decided that in case anything should go wrong with my health in the future, I should at least have something to show for my years at Northwest Vista, so I took an extra semester to finish the requirements to get my associates

I know I will have to work hard. In high school, schoolwork did not come easy, I had to study hard. I had to put more effort into courses than some of my friends. Although I didn’t enjoy school, with hard work I was very proud to graduate with honors and a member of the Senior Beta Club. I know I will have to put the same effort into cosmetology school, but I am actually looking forward to school. I am confident I will succeed because I have the determination necessary to reach my goals. I am looking forward to working in a salon as a cosmetologist, and maybe even owning my own salon one day. I look forward to helping others feel confident and beautiful. My dream is to be a stylist on a movie set. I think that would be amazing and fun, but wherever life takes me in this career, I know that I will excel because I understand what it takes to work hard and most of all, will love doing…

The question is innocent enough. Why did I decide to take cosmetology? There are hundreds of thousands of career paths out there, but this is something I am passionate about. Cosmetology is the art and science of creating, and enhancing the beauty a person already has. A cosmetologist is the cocoon in which a caterpillar entrusts to bring out their inner confidence, to allow them to feel good inside and out. There is nothing like going into a salon, and coming out feeling like a completely different person. Personally, it was something I found therapeutic. As the storms of misfortune found there way to me, and blew me off course, I could always anchor myself and take control by changing something about myself. Whether that be a new hair color, cut, or a beautiful set of acrylic nails. I want to be the person someone comes to, and trusts to make them feel good about themselves. Making people happy has always been something I've strived toward, and going down this path is a never ending adventure. Things are always changing.…
