Animal Cruelty in Cosmetics

Even though animals have some of the same human qualities as we do, I think companies should not be able to test on animals for the use of cosmetic products. Many makeup, skincare, and household products test on animals. Thousands of innocent animals are in labs everyday getting abused, killed, or put through pain without medication. There have been found other alternatives to use instead of testing on animals. Animals have a lot of damage and abuse being done to them just for cosmetic products, and without any medication to help the pain. As stated in this article “Skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed on the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained rabbits without any pain relief.”

“European Union law bans the sale of any cosmetic product that has been tested on animals in finished form after 2004, as well as cosmetics containing ingredients subject to new animal testing after 2013.” (Huffington Post) Laws and countries banning animal testing is a great solution to the problem. The countries that have animal testing banned currently are European Union, Norway, Israel, Turkey, South Korea, New Zealand, and India. The European Union became the first to ban animal testing. South Korea became the most recent to come out with a 5 year plan of banning animal testing in January 2017. However, the United States and China still have yet to ban animal testing. Currently in China, it is required that if you sell cosmetic products you have to test the product out on animals first. The FDA in the United States does not require the companies to test on animals, but it does want to make sure of customer safety and have no health …show more content…
Most companies do want to turn cruelty free. “Animal testing is expensive, it can be imprecise, and to to take a cynical view, it can also be a PR nightmare for a company.” (Wischhover) Some popular cosmetic brands are cruelty free, but a lot still are testing on animals. Just a few popular cosmetic brands that continue testing on animals are Avon, Benefit, CoverGirl, EOS, Clean & Clear, Suave, Dove, and many others. Cosmetic brands that say the products are cruelty free may be, but the ingredients or chemicals they are using to make the product are tested on animals. One problem the cosmetic brands are facing is the fact that China requires the product that is being sold in China to test on animals. The companies want to be cruelty free, but do not want to stop selling in China, because of the high potential sales they are receiving from being sold there. A popular campaign trying to stop the use of cosmetic companies testing on animals is called the #BeCrueltyFree. The campaign is working around the world to try and stop the scientists testing on the animals. Many popular companies have worked with and donated to the campaign to try and put an end to animal cruelty. Researchers have now found many alternatives to animal testing. Some scientists are still not willing to do the alternatives to animal testing because they find it more comfortable

An article was uploaded onto the website Boomerang BusinessWeek about China in the animal testing industry. As discussed previously, animal testing for medical use is ethical because it furthers human knowledge and safety, whereas using animals for cosmetics is unethical because it doesn’t further our knowledge just tests what we already know. Numerous cosmetic companies test on animals because they want to add untested ingredients that aren’t necessary to add into their products ("About Cosmetics Animal Testing"). These ingredients aren 't necessary to use because there are already pre-tested and safe ingredients that can be used instead, so there doesn’t have to be testing on animals. Cruelty-free companies use the already many safe ingredients available in their products, so they do not test on animals ("About Cosmetics Animal Testing”). If these companies do feel the need to test their products they turn to other alternatives of testing before using animals (Keville).…

Testing cosmetics on animals is a very controversial issue that has grown over the past years. I believe that cosmetic animal testing is wrong and should be banned because it is cruel, inaccurate, not very reliable, and has been proven to be unnecessary. Approximately 200,000 animals will suffer and die every year for cosmetics around the world. We as a whole have all decided that this is not necessary which is why we stopped making testing on animal cosmetics something that had to be done. Companies still continue to do it.…

This quote explains animal testing perfectly; “Many cosmetic companies test their new products and ingredients by forcing rabbits, hamsters, and mice, among others, to endure horrific practices such as breathing in poisonous fumes or having lethal chemicals poured into their eyes and rubbed into their skin”(Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). Many supporters of animal testing will argue that it can have positive outcomes, however, humanity uses it in vain ways. This makes it especially wrong because humans are treating animals cruelly and inhumanely mostly to look attractive. Continuing on about cosmetic testing on animals: “Animal testing for cosmetics is an outdated practice and does not provide the most reliable results regarding the safety, performance, or possible reactions that cosmetic products or ingredients could have in a person” (Natasha Cole, Cruelty Free Cosmetics). The reason to continue these means of testing on animals proves to be no longer relevant because easier and more reliable ways of testing do indeed exist.…

Even though some animals are needed for medical research for the tests that give us reliable results, cosmetic research is not necessary. By not in this day and age we should know what chemicals people can work with and what chemicals we cannot. We have enough cosmetic products and brands, it is not necessary for cosmetic researchers to go on and test on animals. Animals should have similar rights as people, and we need to learn to share our planet with them.…
