The woman stares up and down in the mirror noticing all her flaws and imperfections. She is unhappy in her own skin, something no human should ever feel. After thinking and considering her options she decided to look into cosmetic surgery. Everyone lacks confidence in their selves. “Low self-esteem can get us into self-destructive decisions such as tolerating mistreatment or harming ourselves.”(Elizabeth Venzin). When someone has a low self-esteem they don’t have confidence in themselves and are very insecure. This usually leads to cosmetic surgery because they feel it will help them gain confidence. Majority of the time a person is getting surgery for their self. This is completely fine because everyone deserves to feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. As long as a person is aware of what they are choosing and all the possible outcomes it’s actually a cool opportunity we have. We should be free to live and look a way we want, it is our life and we only get to live it once. Might as well make the most of it. No this isn’t your typical look in the mirror see your flaw then move on with your day. “Those who suffer from BDD engage in aesthetic enhancement because they can perfect perceived flaws”(Elise Minton). Anything they see as a flaw they go and get surgery and continue finding more flaws that aren’t even noticeable. They constantly think about their flaw and sometimes even avoid people because they think people will judge them because of their flaw. “patients with this disorder are unlikely to be satisfied with the results of cosmetic surgery, and some people have even attempted to take out their frustration on their plastic surgeon.”(Diane Stresing). People with BDD go through several surgeries to fix what they don’t like but are never satisfied with the result. BDD is an unhealthy disorder because the person’s happiness is linked to beauty.
