In the article, Cosmetic Surgery May Not Improve Self-Esteem, Melissa Dittmann begins by telling the story of DeLisa Stiles, who disliked her appearance because she felt she looked too masculine. She underwent major cosmetic surgeries during her appearance on the reality TV show, The Swan 2. Dittmann says that she might look perfect from the outside, but psychologist are worried about contestants in this and other TV shows because they are not sure whether are not people should undergo drastic changes in their appearance. Dittman also says that 37 studies conducted by Katharine Phillips, MD, and David Castle, MD,showed there were positive outcomes, but also negatives ones, especially in patients with depression, anxiety, or those who have unrealistic expectations. They found that these patients have a hard time accepting that the surgery did not bring the results they wanted and therefore, the surgery can do the opposite of improving one’s self-esteem. Dittman advises surgeons to do a pre and post surgery assessment. The pre assessment can help determine if the patient should or shouldn’t opt for cosmetic surgery. Larocca claims that botox, fillers, and cosmetic surgeries are making women seem 10 or even 15 years younger. This puts pressure on those who haven’t undergone any procedures to do so. It makes them feel ashamed of their age. She points out that it has even become unacceptable to have a big tummy after having a baby and that surgeons are coming up special deals exclusively for mothers.
