Cory was part of the elite submarine service. He was a nuclear missile technician, served alongside a crew of 119 other sailors who depended on each other to stay alive, hundreds of feet underwater, for months at a time. Cory’s job terrified me, because it not only consisted of arming the missiles but targeting and firing them also. Just the magnitude of it all, sitting in front of that control panel day after day, knowing what its primary function is. I knew there were security measures and protocols in place but, I finally understood why Cory said he had a different type of mentality when he was out to sea. The responsibility he had chosen to undertake, how he dealt with the crazy reality of it all, gave me a new appreciation and deeper respect for my husband.
