Cory Doctorow's Little Brother

Great Essays
Little brother is a fictional novel written by Cory Doctorow. It contains many themes and lessons about the world we live in today.

The protagonist of the novel is Marcus Yallow. Marcus is a senior at Cesar Chavez High in San Francisco. He is secretive, rebellious, a troublemaker and determined. These traits are shown throughout the whole novel as it is told in his point of view.

We know all people are different, fictional or non-fictional, thus making everyone unique. However, the Marcus and I have 1 key similarity; we both care for our friends a lot. This idea seems pretty obvious since most people care about their friends but his type of caring is on another level. This is shown on page 74, “I’ll beat them, I’ll get Darryl. I’m not going

Marcus knows all about coding, hacking and strategies he could use technology against the government. On page 130, Marcus tests out a method to mess up the DHS’s search when he passed by someone and triggered his arphid cloner. This is described when he says, “The cloner sucked down the numbers off his credit cards and his car keys, his passport and the hundred-dollar bills in his wallet.”(Doctorow.130). His idea includes advanced knowledge of technology and how the government uses it in order for him to create a way to ruin their way of tracking people.

The hero’s journey is a pattern that all good stories follow that describes that adventure the main character or protagonist goes on. In Little Brother, Marcus’s story may not seem as adventurous as exploring a jungle to find a treasure or he may not seem like a hero. Despite that, his story still follows this principle.

The hero’s journey has many stages or steps and I believe the most impactful part of Marcus’s journey was the “tests, allies and enemies” stage. This stage is when the hero is tested and finds out who his allies are in the “Special world”.

In the novel, this is when Marcus decides to go against the government and turns to his friends for help or to find allies. He asks one of his closest friends, Van and she refused to help since she thought it was wrong. Then, he asks his other friend, Jolu who agrees to help. Afterwards, they hold a party to gain more

In Latin,“intertextus”, means to intermingle while weaving serves as the root for the word “intertextuality” which was introduced in the late 1960s and thoroughly used in novels written by Toni Morrison. Morrison published the Song of Solomon in 1977, which follows the life of Macon “Milkman” Dead III from birth to death, as he travels from his hometown in Michigan to Virginia in search of his family and himself. As a privileged African American, Milkman has a diverse array of experiences, ranging from being tied to his family’s business to robbing his own aunt. Traditionally, heroes in myths have some of the same elements in the structure of their stories. In each odyssey, a person needs to experience or live through specific actions and ordeals until he becomes whole as a hero. In the epic poem, The Iliad by Homer, the main character Achilles journeys through stages of a Hero’s Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell, including his dream of relinquishing his role as a warrior, his feud with Agamemnon, and how he resolves the loss of his closest friend until he evolves into a hero. Initially, two elements that generally occur at the beginning of-of an epic journey are “The World of the Common Day” and “The Refusal of The Call.”…

The development of the epic Iliad is highlighted within the characters, plot and setting of the story which is written at a different time than the story took place. One of the most important characters of the story, Achilles follows that trend of character development throughout the plot. His role as a warrior of the Greeks under the authority of Agamemnon is constantly challenged throughout the epic and ultimately shapes the outcome of the Trojan War. Achilles role as a Greek hero during the epic helped the Greeks defeat the Trojans by proving his toughness and excellence as a leader and fighter following his un-heroism that he showcases in the beginning of the Iliad.…
