Betsy Barrett As the last line in the book says “the creatures look from pig to man, and from man to pig; but it was impossible to say which was which.” By the end of the story the animals were so overcome with power that they had turned into what they had hated the most: people. Power is a thing that takes over minds. No matter who the person is and when a person has it, it can completely ruin them. In his novel, Animal Farm, George Orwell uses Snowball, Mr. Jones, and Napoleon to demonstrate that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Snowball had been the first main leader after the rebellion. His ideas for the farm were to make it efficient and easy for the animals. However his thoughts were in the future and did not think about the needs of the animals currently. In the beginning of the rebellion, after the commandments were written the animals came back from work and “it was noticed that the milk was missing” (26). By taking from the other animals, Snowball is using the animals newfound freedom and willingness to do work to get the things that he wants. Also it is noticed that he has no remorse or guilt for the bad things that he has done. After ‘the Battle of Cowshed’, Boxer is feeling very morose about the fact that a human was killed by him. To comfort him, Snowball tells the horse that “the only good human is a dead one” (43). His lack of empathy gives off the impression that he doesn’t care …show more content…
Jones and Napoleon are all great examples of how power is a destroyer of relationships and the people in them. Corruption due to power is almost inevitable because of its presences in people 's lives. Even if other animals were to rebel against Napoleon, it would still be an unjust society due to the fact that everyone has the want for control in the back of their minds. Even though the story is an allegory for the Russian Revolution, its other hidden messages are very relevant and important to real life society, then and
