Corruption is an unethical method used by a person to gain advantage over others. Today, corruption is one of the greatest factors hindering development and stifling the realization of democracy. Corruption adversely affects the growth of a nation. It reduces the government revenue, and creates inequalities in distribution of income and wealth. It affects a nation’s development economically, socially, and politically. Corruption comes in many forms, and appears often in politics. Politicians on a quite regular basis are found guilty of corruption. According to World Audit report on corruption, India is sixty seventh most corrupt country in the world as of 2014 and ironically, ranks fifty first in democracy.
There was a time when people did not get to choose their rulers, instead they were ruled by a single family and its successors. The ruler was called the King and this kind of governance is called monarchial governance. Then slowly, with the change in time, the ways to govern a country/region also changed. Enlightened with the sentiments of service to their motherland and social reform, people started dedicating their lives to their countries without even expecting anything in return. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Raja Ram Mohan Roy are some great Indian personalities who sacrificed their own lives for the welfare of society.
