Corruption In The Illustrated Man

The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury contains symbolism on the corruption of our society. Never has it been realized that technology could be ruining society bit by bit. Bradbury explains the result of corrupted society through motifs. A motif is a decorative design or pattern that is repetitive. The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury contains the motifs of death, corruption of technology, and fear. The Illustrated man is filled with every chapter as a short story; death, corruption of technology, and fear are found in almost all of them. Initially, death is found at the end of almost every single chapter for this is the book’s solution. One of the most horrible deaths is found in the very first chapter. The Veldt is about a nursery that can morph into real life imagery from the images the children think of. At the end of this chapter, the kids have locked the parents in the nursery and it states:

A great example of fear is in the chapter of Kaleidoscope. Kaleidoscope is a chapter about a crew lost in space because they had a ship malfunction. All the men were scared inside but there was one incident where the text states: “Now, as they had discovered the horror, two of the men began to scream. In a nightmare Hollis saw one of them float by, very near, screaming and screaming… He would never stop. He would go on screaming for a million miles… disturbing all of them” (29). From the screaming, everyone began to realize how terrifying their situation really was, how all they can do is fear for they have no control over what happens. Another example of fear shown throughout the book is in the final chapter The Illustrated man. This chapter is about a man who receives real like tattoos and two of them predict the future.
