“Church of Corruption” “Corruption is the enemy of development, and of good governance. It must be rid of,” Pratibha Patil, former president of India, quotes. In the instance of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, corruption is seen directly in the heart and soul of Salem, Massachusetts: the church. The mutual dislike apparent between John Proctor and Reverend Parris stemmed from Proctor’s view of Parris’s corrupt nature in the church. Is a church of corruption to blame, or rather a man not as devout as need be? Throughout The Crucible, John Proctor becomes known for showing a disdain towards Reverend Parris and the church. Proctor expresses many objections to Parris’s way of leadership. Proctor is not seen in church regularly and claims one of the reasons to be Parris’s way of leadership. One of Proctor’s objections towards Parris is that Parris is so often seen preaching hate and preaching about the devil. He claims that Parris so rarely speaks of god during his services and that is what Proctor can’t stand about him saying, “I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only hellfire …show more content…
Take it to heart, Mr. Parris. There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God any more.” John also speaks of another instance when Parris had the entire church pray for them to receive golden candlesticks for two weeks time, until he finally got them, instead of focusing on actual prayer, saying to Hale, “Since we built the church there were pewter candlesticks upon the altar; Francis Nurse made them y’know, and a sweeter hand never touched the metal. But Parris came, and for twenty week he preach nothin’ but golden candlesticks until he had them. Reverend Hale and John Proctor Written in the 1950s, Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible delineates the situation of the McCarthyism conflicts in America while the plays’ events itself revolve around the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. In the play, two major characters are Reverend Hale, an “expert on witches” sent to Salem for investigation, and John Proctor, a man known for his leadership and hard work. Proctor and Hale, other than both being Puritans, are alike in their actions and motives since they both see the depravity of the court and seek to protect people from it. However, they have major differences in their character as they have contrasting dedication to Christianity and the values that they live by. John Proctor and Reverend Hale…

In the play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, there is a constant misuse of power and authority throughout the play. Characters such as Samuel Parris, Reverend Hale, or Governor Danforth repeatedly abuse their position for their personal beliefs and goals. To push past everyone else’s feelings and thoughts, they denied the other characters in conflict with them, thus causing those with power unequal grounds and a biased standpoint. Overall, the play was nowhere near a power struggle. There were times in which characters in favor of Abigale and the girls would continue to push around those trying to prove themselves innocent.…

“There is in all children a natural corruption and root of actual rebellion against God” (Robinson). In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the Puritan community of Salem gets swept up in mass hysteria and madness, falling for the false accusations of witchcraft made up by the children. The desperate act of accusing others of witchcraft becomes the children’s avenue of power in the constricting society of Salem, self-preserving themselves from their abominations performed in the forest. By depicting the children as the accusers, Miller illustrates how a child’s deceptive appearance of innocence, mysterious operation of imagination, and search for attention, play a major influence in contributing to the unjustified deaths of many during the Salem…

Proctor lives his life by doing good by good deeds for his community, guided by his own sense of righteousness rather than the definition of religion as defined by people like Reverend Parris whose faith and morality is defined and measured by scripture and nothing else. Proctor’s faith in goodness does not follow the letter of the law as defined by the word of God narrowly defined by the Bible. His sense of right and wrong is guided instead by his own sense of morality. In a world where scripture defines all, Proctor’s morality is invisible. Proctor refuses to confess to spite the court, not because of his relationship with God.…
