“I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; god knows how black my sins are! It is enough!” (Miller 4.1.694). So Proctor had just confessed being with the devil and then judges want his confession to be nailed on the cross where all of the town can see. Which he believes is unnecessary, Proctor thinks that being hanged is already enough and that God sees his actions already. He doesn’t want to have his name cursed and his reputation poisoned because he was trying to do the best thing for his family and others. In this scene he is quite frustrated with the court, even though he had given them what they had asked for they are still asking for more.
