Corruption In Lord Of The Flies

Improved Essays
Corrupt. The act of dishonesty in personal gain for self reward. When the word “corrupt” comes into mind, one thinks of evil or chaos, selfishness or unloyalty. These acts are taking over logic and reasoning faster than ever before. In the novel, a group of schoolboys are flown out of a war zone and eventually crash into an isolated island. In the first few nights, the boys work together and focus on their teamwork and try their best to keep a signal fire going to get rescued. But as time goes by, a few of the boys start to turn “savage” and overtake any sort of logic and reasoning… All teamwork seems to disappear and nobody seems to want to help anyone but themselves… William Golding compares this to society and demonstrates that if there …show more content…
“That’s right. Can’t catch my breath. I was the only boy in our school who had asthma. And I’ve been wearing specs since I was three.” But since his body structure comes across as fat, or nonathletic, the kids automatically give him no supremacy or really even pay attention to him. They all consider him as a joke or a fool and think his ideas are “useless” and if his ideas are ever used, his credit is taken by Ralph. The boy who looks like a leader. “You’re chief. You tell em’ off.” (51) In society, that is how almost all of us act. As long as a leader looks as though he is strong, intelligent, or “knows the way,” they will be elected as leader. Piggy’s death is also a huge symbol in society. As Jack and his tribe finally start to take over the island, Piggy is really only the last source of intelligence and Jack has Roger kill it. Piggy symbolizes logic or reasoning and how fast savagery can really take over anything good in society as long as the people in the world (Roger) are willing to …show more content…
Such as intelligence. Or maybe hope for rescue. Or logic and reasoning. In the novel when Piggy's glasses break, it may seem like not such a big factor of symbolism, but it's one of the biggest symbols in the book. Jack is the character who breaks his glasses. (71) He is also represents chaos and evil. The breaking of Piggy's glasses symbolizes the beginning of savagery starting to take over the island… It demonstrates that in society, whenever there is logic and reason presented anywhere, chaos and evil will push it away. “Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks”. The “beast” inside of us all will reject the fact that it is ok for someone else besides us to have a good idea. That it is okay to give someone else credit for something that we did not do. Piggy's glasses also can represent hope. “His specs! Use them as burning glasses!” Ralph had the idea to set a signal fire but the boys did not know how to start it. So they used Piggy's glasses as a magnifying glass to use the sun rays and start the fire. If it wasn’t for his glasses, they would not have gotten the fire going. So the glasses can also fall under the “hope of and rescue”

Differentiating Axioms “Because power corrupts, society's demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases (John Adams). ” This statement by John Adams explains how as society’s corrupt voracity increases, the need for moral citizens like Piggy are required because they satisfy the hunger while those with the characteristics of Jack add tinder to the fire. In Golding’s book, The Lord of the Flies, British schoolboys crash land on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. But every foreigner, even with similar backgrounds, all have differentiating axioms.…

Piggy is overweight, short-sighted, and asthmatic. His physical inferiority to the other boys on the island makes him a representation of weakness. In this natural, wild setting where survival is key, it becomes clear to the reader that Piggy will not make it off the island alive. The third conflict illustrated in the earlier chapters is one of order versus chaos. Ralph represents logic, responsibility, civility, reason, and order.…

Betrayal is a common theme across fiction literature and media. Showing moments of a person turning his back on his boss, leader, and superior power to become independent. Or gather their own people and fight back, become rival of their former boss. Betrayal would be like, putting your loyalty in someone, and them turning their back on yours. It is something that can happen to anybody in the real life and Paradise Lost by John Milton, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and the hit TV series El Chema by Rafael Amaya all have the realistic and eye opening portrayals of betrayal and the impact it can have on the lives of the characters involved.…

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, conflict - both internal and external - portrays a major development in the theme and plot of the young boys in this novel. On an island composed of only pre-adolescent boys, it is unquestionable that there would be conflict amongst them. Golding blatantly shows the reader the external conflicts that occur between one another, including both physical and verbal altercations. The author also cryptically gives the reader a display of the conflict the boys struggle with within themselves and their own thoughts. Despite the many instances of external conflict, the subtle internal conflicts are much more critical to the plot and overall theme of Lord of the Flies.…

In 1954, The Lord of the Flies became published and revealed the many flaws of the modern society. A group of boys crash-landed on an island and created a society in order to survive the ordeal. William Golding, the author, used each of the boys to represent some aspect of society in the world, which also showed the various flaws in society. Golding used the world around him as the inspiration behind The Lord of the Flies, so it would come as no surprise that the time period that Golding lived in influenced his book. One lens to look at literature through, called New Historicism, states that a literary work should be considered a product of the time, place, and historical circumstances of the time period rather than as an isolated work of art…

Evening was come, not with calm beauty but with the threat of violence” (Golding 150). This quote shows how Jack’s natural instinct to act violently is his identity. Because society has broken down, Jack is given the ability to do whatever he wants. Therefore, by acting violently and trying to obtain power, he shows how without society 's effect on his acts, his true identity is exposed. Similarly, Piggy shows how his identity is formed through the societal breakdown the boys experience on the…

Jack and his hunters were irresponsible and as a result they missed a chance to be rescued.…

The boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding undergo traumatic experiences that put their morality to the test. In Lord of the Flies, the struggle of Ralph, Jack, the hunters, Piggy, and Simon to resist evil and remain good while on the deserted island proves how the novel is a moral allegory because their internal conflicts add another level to the story.…
