Yossarian pretends to be sick to avoid having to go to missions, he is earned a bad reputation among the doctors and nurses. They are aware that Yossarian is lying but are obligated to treat him, it displays a lack of what a educated doctor is able to do. Because a patient, Yossarian, knows symptoms of a disease he is able to get out of doing his work. While Yossarian is a central character, Joseph gives him many negative characteristics such as lethargic, liar, slacker and so on.Yossarian pretends he has done work when he really has not. “Yossarian had not help build .. never went there to help till it was finished” (Heller 9). Yossarian attempts to get Doc daneeka to help him out of doing anymore missions through a bribe, yet Daneeka does not report him for any miss conduct. While Daneeka is seen as someone who would be honest, he lacks concern, and is careless about how his actions affect others, he accepts a bribe and does not even hold his part of the bargain ,which eventually comes back to deal the greatest loss of his life. Clevinger after tripping during an march is accused of being unpatriotic. When he is accused he was found guilty and punished simply because it was officer who had filed against him. There was no proof, in fact the interrogations that they had with him were senseless. It is once again displayed the misuse of power among men with power. “Nobody asked you what you did to Yossarian. We asked you what you didn’t say to him”(Heller 65). Joseph displays how judgmental everyone is as a society. what good would it do for anyone knowing what did not say? What would it even prove? If not saying something specific was a crime, is not everyone a criminal? Milo gets out of doing his missions simply by tricking Cathcart. Milo throughout the novels had been using his plane to do trades without any consequences. Once again bribery is used to buy people’s confidence/trust and shows how officers incharge who should display intelligence and have the ability to think of strategies to fight against and win against enemies that he has not met, are being tricked by one his own soldiers who doesn't have to put effort in doing so.
