Reading the title, Insert Flap “A” and Throw Away, of Perelman’s essay, I was immediately reminded of a tiny telescope model my younger brother purchased. which I was instructed to help him construct, along with the frustration and anger it brought me. Through the title, the author creates a connection between the reader and himself, emphasizing that he is only human, therefore he can only follow such meaningless directions so closely. Eager to learn the outcome of this similar situation that he was put through, I was prompted to read his essay.…

After reading both great essays on the Guerilla Street Art and Freegans, I gained a new understanding on both subjects. Both readers were very descriptive, opening up a compassion in me that I never explored. I enjoyed reading about the Freegans the most due to the fact that I have friends that live a relatively similar lifestyle; however, I call them dumpster divers. I never knew there was an actual definition for someone that lived off of another ’s trash.…

Before reading Unwind, I was indifferent about abortion. I knew abortion was wrong, but it is so common in today’s society that I’ve become numb to the idea. I’ve heard every excuse for why abortion is “Okay” and I thought people are going to do what they want to do. This thought never bothered me because I’ve never been in the position that many people are in when they have to make that choice. While I was reading Unwind, I realized how awful and cruel it is to unwind teenagers who actually have a way to say no and escape the corrupt system.…

While it may appear that city growth was ideal for any group of people at the time- and in turn contribute to moral growth- Swift suggests that growth of cities has caused inadequate public health. Whilst Gulliver is in Laputa he exclaims that he was “surprised to find corruption grown so high... by the force of luxury so lately introduced” which indicates he thinks luxury and selfishness causes corruption; and luxuries tend to come around when empires have grown and developed and therefore people being rich enough to buy luxuries and also greedy about it. Moreover this ironic juxtaposition between physical growth and moral decay highlights the satire portrayed by Swift and it also shows Gulliver’s confusion at how other countries “where vices…
