Ever since Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, people have both used and misused technology. The development of technology has brought along a thing called the internet, which has strong effects on the way people act and behave today. It gives people access to information through media, entertainment from video games, and communications through social networks that can be harmful to people of early ages. Many people today believe that the increase of violence in society is due to the many platforms that spread influential ideas that can affect people 's behaviors negatively. In Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 this is shown by the dramatic change in society from what reality is today. These book’s themes explain how technology is taking over and what could potentially happen if aspects in our life were surrounded by technological advancement. This causes a society that follows others and are not capable of thinking for themselves and can even take away a person’s humanity in some cases. Violence in society has increased greatly, like in the dystopian novels Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, due to the advances in new media platforms, availability to said media platforms, the openness of media, and the power that can be gained from technology. Computers and other electronic devices have become very popular within a community. They sell many devices at well-known stores and have models within an individual 's budget just around the corner from any home. In the article Media, Influence on Children Clark says, “Availability, as well as greater affordability for American families, has provided easier access to media for children” (Clark 1579). This shows kids have the access they need and all that someone could hope for is for the child to make intelligent decisions. In 1984 all of society was subjected to technology at an early age and was forced to be monitored by these devices. Although in reality you can choose if you want these devices, these books show how the use of technology can get out of hand. In the same article Clark explains where children can find technology stating “...both in their homes and schools”. Children are already surrounded by technology wherever they go and can rely on it has a source of knowledge(which it is), but lack the social skills that keep people involved with others. Typically students have smart phones on them 24/7 and “Smartphones typically have a camera installed, which has led to inappropriate photos of students and the sharing of them via email and text message”(Batten 524). This has led to the lack of privacy within our environment almost like Fahrenheit 451 and 1984. which they can not keep any secrets either by telescreens or nosy neighbors. Technology also greatly influences people 's behavior at early ages. When kids are young they are trying to figure out what is right and wrong and with things like media sometimes the right thing can be unclear. Actions speak louder than words, …show more content…
A new form of bullying has also developed along with electronics called cyber-bullying. Due to the many platforms of social media available there is an overwhelming population of people who post a large portions of their life online for the world to see. They will post opinions that people do not agree with and cause problems between people with opposing opinion to fight against them in the form of cyberbullying, which “6 percent of students ages 12-18 reported being cyber-bullied during the school year”(Batten 523). Being bullied can cause depression and extreme sadness because they feel that they have no purpose in life. In some extreme cases “students who have been bullied and humiliated online have attempted or committed suicide”(Batten 523) from feeling out of control and empty inside. Cyber-bullying has become such a problem that even ”States have responded by passing bullying laws”(Batten 523) prohibitin hurtful acts of bullying online. In Fahrenheit 451 the regular people in society were empty and did not contain real emotion. Lots of people got so sad that they tried to commit suicide. The government needed to develop its own robots for pumping out people 's stomach because they needed a more efficient way of doing it due to the overwhelming population that actually tried to commit suicide by means of medication
