Corrupt Police Officers

Everyone seems to have an opinion as to whether or not our country’s police officers are an organization of corrupt, racially prejudiced, bullies. Some will adamantly swear that this is the case for the majority. Still, others maintain that there have been a few isolated incidents that have been sensationalized to the points of distorting the true situation. One thing is clear, people are passionate on both sides of the debate. I have my own reasons for my feelings regarding our country’s police force. I tell you, with a sense of both pride and concern, that my son, Joe, is going to become a policeman. Joe will graduate from high school this coming spring, and then he will continue his education and training in the field. He has always wanted to be a policeman; it is all he has ever wanted to do. Joe has been in the Plano Police Explorer’s Program for several years now. It is a nationwide organization, they train and compete with each other on a national level. I was able to go to a recent meeting and speak with his group, and I am impressed with all of them. This is a fairly small, and elite group of young people. They take their role in civil service with serious devotion, and they do understand that they are part of the next generation of law enforcement. These adolescents are well informed about the current controversy, and they are not ignorant to the fact that there are some cases of misconduct that are valid. We are meant to be constitutionally protected against excessive fines and cruel or unusual punishment from both state and federal government by the 8th amendment. However, there are situations where law enforcement must use force, when and how much is situationally determined.
