Corrosion Essay: Zinc Coating

Corrosion is when metals or other materials corrode over time. “Corrosion is a two-step process that requires three things: a metallic surface, an electrolyte, and oxygen. During the corrosion process, surface-level metal atoms dissolve into an aqueous solution, leaving the metal with an excess of negative charge.”(Corrosion, Boundless Chemistry, First two bullet points) The nail will undergo a corrosion process as it is placed in the cup filled with salt water. However, depending on the coating is how corroded the nail will be.
Zinc coating has many characteristics that make it a very good protective coating for iron and steel products, (like nails). Zinc has an excellent corrosion resistance in most environments. This is why it’s successful being used as a protective coating on a many products and in many different climates. A normal galvanized coating normally lasts about 70 to 150 years without needing to be replaced in

“Nail polish sticks to our nails because of different "plasticizers" in it. These plasticizers are usually made out of some sort of fatty acid or castor oil” (Vega, paragraph 3). Nail Polish normally acts as something to protect a person's nails. Since nail polish protects nails then it could possibly protect a nail from rust since nail polish dries around the surface of the nail. Some nail polishes are made out of different substances such as what contacts are made out of. “A protein specific monomer (defined as a molecule that when bound to other identical molecules forms a polymer) or hydroxyethyl methacrylate (which was one of the first materials introduced in the manufacturing process of flexible contact lenses, adheres well to the nail bed. Once it is turned into a polymer, it becomes extremely chip resistant. Poly/methyl methacrylate (the polymer of hydroxyethy methacrylate) is often used as a product of Plexiglas, which is both extremely durable and flexible.” (Vega paragraph
