“If different levels of the independent variable give rise to differences in the dependent variable, then a causal link between the two variables has been demonstrated” (Burchell, 2006). 2. The Biology of Psychology
1. It is well understood by psychologists that “all behavior is biological.” Using specific examples as it applies neurons; the brain; and the nervous system, explain what this means.
Any behavior that we do activates neurons that makes us react in certain ways. Our brains control every single motion, thought, or behavior that we do. Our nervous system works very closely with our brain, it is all connected to our brain. There are currents running through every part of our body that communicates with our brain, then our brain sends a signal telling our bodies to perform a certain action. These currents are controlled by the billions of neurons in our brains. The neuron itself has many parts. In the center of the neuron is the nucleus that holds genetic information, controls protein synthesis, as well as holds the energy that the neuron needs to function (Noba, 2014, p. 85). The soma is what holds the nucleus and is the neurons cell body. …show more content…
This could be any kind of substance, it is not necessarily a drug. Some examples are food, coffee, or even candy. Substance use is not a bad thing, we all do it every day, multiple times a day with various things. Substance abuse is using a drug until it starts causing issues. There is a large spectrum of issues when it comes to substance abuse, and a lot of it depends on what the substance is. Substance abuse can be “chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her” (National Institution of Drug Abuse, 2012). Some problems may be that the person seems as if they cannot stop using the substance, they use it very often, they continue to use it although there is a negative effect, the substance causes an issue with work or relationships, they experience tolerance, as well as try and hide the use (Noba, 2014). The most common things that are heard of with substance abuse are drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. But there can be other things such as coffee. Some examples of substance abuse are smoking tobacco until lung cancer has developed, drinking alcohol until the persons liver quits working, or drinking coffee until a tolerance is built up. Substance misuse is using a drug for something other than it is intended for. Substance misuse is a common problem, especially with prescription drugs. With prescription
