Correlation studies, on the other hand, allow researchers to observe patterns that are not manipulated as they are in experiments. Correlations studies also only allow two variables to be observed at one time so that “the direction and strength for the association between the two variables” (Noba, 2014, p. 37) can be determined. Substance use is not a bad thing, we all do it every day, multiple times a day with various things. Substance abuse is using a drug until it starts causing issues. There is a large spectrum of issues when it comes to substance abuse, and a lot of it depends on what the substance is. Substance abuse can be “chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her” (National Institution of Drug Abuse, 2012). Some problems may be that the person seems as if they cannot stop using the substance, they use it very often, they continue to use it although there is a negative effect, the substance causes an issue with work or relationships, they experience tolerance, as well as try and hide the use (Noba, 2014). The most common things that are heard of with substance abuse are drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. But there can be other things such as coffee. Some examples of substance abuse are smoking tobacco until lung cancer has developed, drinking alcohol until the persons liver quits working, or drinking coffee until a tolerance is built up. Substance misuse is using a drug for something other than it is intended for. Substance misuse is a common problem, especially with prescription drugs. With prescription
