Correctional Officers Training Academy (COTA)

After watching the video posted along with our discussion, "Prepping for prison" (2013), I would have to admit that this is a career that I would like to get into. I like the variety of challenges and military training posed throughout the Correctional Officers Training Academy (COTA). I feel that the different strategies taught and implemented would be very helpful to retain and utilize in any inmate to staff communication in this field whether it be positive or negative. I believe my personality is stronger than some females I have encountered over the years and I feel I am able to assert myself more dominantly if ever needed in any given situation.

Much research was conducted to locate the qualifications and automatic disqualifiers to work

Moral on Capital Punishment Working at a prison is a dangerous job; you are surrounded by evil minded crooks and murderers every day. There is a need for correctional education! As mentioned in Governor Coumo’s article there are many statistics that support educating prisoners and how that education positively correlates to them not being incarcerated again. When I think about correctional education, in my mind its more of the continuing education frame because often any age person in the prison system can decide to go back and get a college degree while they are in prison. In fact some may have never had the opportunity for higher education until they went to prison. I know that sounds backwards, but in some cases it is very true.…

During National Correctional Workers’ Week, the Bureau of Prisons pays tribute to our fallen Correctional Officers, who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Every day, we put the safety of the American people above our own, as we all walk through the doors, gates, grills and sally ports. We chose to jeopardize our lives and the lives of our families to complete the Bureau of Prisons mission, to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens. We knowingly put ourselves in harm’s way to protect and keep our communities more safe and secure.…

I cannot sound like an 18-year-old college freshman who just checked out books at the school’s library. As myself, I do not seem credible to most adults. I have not poured years of my time into this research, and I probably never will. My goal is to appear like I am in their age group and I know all there is to know about the prison system. This is the most difficult part of this assignment.…

Correctional Industries are the work programs in correctional facilities that provide real world work experience to offenders. These work opportunities provide the means for offenders to pay the court-ordered financial obligation, victim restitution and help support their families and provide them with marketable skills and a positive work ethics that they will need for the workforce outside of prison. This program also helps to alleviate idleness, decrease anxiety, and give the offender an opportunity to be productive citizens that are going back to the communities. I have never been to a jail or see inside (only on crime shows). I wonder how they will look similar and different to a prison. On the other end, I am nervous for how the incarcerated will act towards our class walking through. This opportunity to me, is purely a learning experience. With the simulation we took part in at the beginning of the year, it shows how easy it is to end up in jail after being released.…

A career in corrections appeals to me for a number of reasons. I enjoy working with other people and excel working with people from different backgrounds other than my own. While I was in the Army there was strong demand for a structured work environment. This is something I desire in a career and feel that corrections as other professions in law enforcement demand high level of structure and expect nothing less. To attain this expectation requires individuals to be highly disciplined, so they are able to give 100 percent every moment they are not only on the clock, but when you’re on your own time as well.…

Integrating back into society can be very challenging for an individual who is coming out of prison. The label of a felony conviction on one’s record is often a major barrier to finding employment after prison. They must obtain vocational skills and education to successfully reintegrate back into the workforce. Formerly imprisoned individuals, on average, are less educated than the general population and many felons lack a high school diploma or GED certificate and the professional skills needed to succeed in the labor force (Davis), so some prisons offer basic programs for inmates that include adult basic education, vocational studies, and post-secondary education (Petty). Of the three, vocational studies appear to have the best results in getting inmates trained for jobs that are readily available upon release.…

Every day, assaults, riots, rapes and murders are a fact of life in our nation’s prisons. In my opinion, sometimes our correctional system seems to cause more problems than assistance to the society. The system is very expensive, overcrowded, and inefficient in certain aspects. One of the problems The United States Correctional System faces today is prison violence. Violence is not random or mindless but steamed from identifiable conflicts between inmates that had escalated due to the lack of positive coping skills and could be avoided with more counseling accessibility.…
