Jefferson then appointed his secretary Meriwether Lewis with the duty of the exploration of the newly acquisitioned lands. Lewis appointed his old friend and ally William Clark to aid him on his mission. Lewis and Clark started their expedition in St. Louis and hired people for their adventure, then they set off with around 40 explorers. Numerous discoveries were made along the adventure by Lewis while Clark charted out maps for the area (around 300 new species were discovered.) Lewis would send shipments to Jefferson now and then of supplies from the west.
Although the Corps of Discovery were given orders to make peace with the natives, they were still a present threat. If worse came to worse the group would be ravaged by Indians and their tale would swiftly be brought to its end. To make peace, the expedition gave the Missouri Natives gifts consisting of beads, paint, and tobacco. Luckily, the men were accompanied by a Shoshone Indian named Sacagawea. While split Lewis´ group was attacked by Blackfoot Indians. Two men died, being the only deaths the Corps would face. The men reunited to return home. After the journey the men returned home to prestige. Lewis and Clark were given large amounts of land and double their promised pay. Lewis was made governor of the upper Louisiana Territory. Lewis would eventually end his own life after suffering from depression. Clark was made the governor of the Missouri Territory and superintendent of Indian affairs for Upper Louisiana. Clark would die at the age of 68 in the house of his son who he named after his friend Meriwether
