Reflective Essay: My Cultural Experience In The Workplace

We live in a world where society has been convinced that culture is strictly based on religion. This misconception couldn’t be farther from the truth. Culture is embedded into our daily lives. It is in the music we listen to, the clothes we wear, and even the street art that we see as we walk through downtown Memphis. A commonly overlooked form of culture is in the professional world. Corporate culture is one of the greatest factors in deciding where one wants to work. From attitude, to the way people dress, corporate culture can be found in any business. That is why I chose for my cultural experience to be in the corporate world. All of my life, I have been extremely interested in business. My father worked his way up to being Senior Vice President of a company by the name of Anthem, and I always admired his success and where his drive got him. Consequently, I have always dreamt of reaching that type of success in the corporate world. In order to succeed, however, you have to know what type of business you want to be in. I have always been told to work in an environment that suits me best because that is where I will thrive. If you don’t love where you work, it is hard to reach your dream job. This lesson became real to me in my interview. I have always been one to separate work and play. Vector puts the two together. This made the thought of working there uncomfortable to me because I would never be able to get anything done if there was an open opportunity to slack off. This experience definitely taught me that I shouldn’t compromise when it comes to a career. If I actually want to get where I’m headed, I need to get a job that uses the same principles that I excel
