This bill did not end up being passed, but it started an extremely controversial debate ; should students receive corporal punishment in school? Many say that yes, schools should enforce that type of punishment because detentions, staying in for recess, writing sentences isn 't enough of a penalty/ consequence for an extremely unruly child. The strikes are said to only be for serious offenses and are strictly monitored and there is to be a witness present. There was also uproar that corporal punishment violated the eighth amendment, which was cruel and unusual punishment. The supreme court has ruled that it is not a violation. Many people contradict this theory of corporal punishment and find it absolutely appalling.
