Corporal Punishment in Child Rearing
"Children are the world 's most valuable resources and its best hope for the future," John Fitzgerald Kennedy. As adults, our responsibility is to raise our child as an honorable being. This may be what James Dobson craves for why he is such a prominent critic of permissive parenting. Many of us, including myself, reminisced how it was as a child when we had to respect our elders and were afraid to be caught misbehaving.

This practice dates as far back as 10th Century BC, and cruel as it sounds, is certainly present in modern society. Children must be allowed to express themselves without fear of retribution, but too, must be reprimanded - and if necessary, spanked depending on the nature of the misbehavior. The Bible has served as a guide to parenting practices, and like all teachings and beliefs, points to moderation and balance. Train up a child in the way he should grow, and when he grows old he shall not depart from it, but do not spare the rod and spoil the child it says. Although I was cognizant of the historical origins of corporal punishment and permissive parenting, I have been enlightened as to how much it has not changed, just revised. Mentioned in my readings was made of the Spartan method of child-rearing, and upon viewing “300,” the movie about Sparta’s legacy, truly opened my eyes as to how males and females were treated differently, but discipline nonetheless, was expected of
