Question 6
During my volunteer work at Cornerstone Ranch and Rescue, I learned that physics could be applied to any aspect of everyday life. This has helped me solidify my understanding of physics and eager to learn more. The realization of how physics is everywhere has sparked my interest to want to learn more physics in order to get a better understanding of how and why the world works the way it does. The property owner related many concepts of horseback riding and ranch work with physics-related ideas so that I could relate them to a science-based mindset. He showed me how using leverage would give me more control over horses that are much stronger than me. We laid down thousands of feet of PVC pipe for water lines to run throughout the property, which included a slope so that we could get adequate pressure at the ends of the pipe. We also did calculations of how much pressure would increase or decrease based on the size of the pipe. These numbers were also based on the cost, so we had to find

I enjoy having problems to solve, because of this my family has me solving their problems around the house, or answering questions they have about how things work. My creativity has propelled me in a direction to learn more about how things work so that I can apply my knowledge into creating other newer ways, make inventions or different designs. I enjoy doing this and I believe that this a great mindset to have for an aspiring aerospace or mechanical engineer. Since I was a little kid I have always fueled my creativity by building things out of whatever I could get my hands on. For example, I remember that I had a lot of toy trucks and my mom would yell at me for taking them apart and trying to connect all the motors together to make a faster truck. I was about 5 or 6 then, nowadays my mom gets mad at me for trying to make an electric furnace out of a

You would think people who have next to nothing in their lives, would want everything they could have their hands on. After spending a week with people who had less then me, I understood that I was completely wrong. I learned that people who have nothing are the most caring and empathetic. The people who lived at the camp we were staying at, greeted us with open arms and warm hearts. As a mission team, we were obviously caring people.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

Pre-Experience Journal Entry I was born to be an engineer. I grew up playing math games, building lego sets, and taking apart electronics. My Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) will definitely be in the area of engineering. More specifically, I would love to do either computer science or electrical engineering, as these are the areas I want to major in when I go to college. I came to GSMST because I have always had an interest in engineering, and GSMST has only made that interest stronger.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

Mallory Cattle catastrophes After a whole disastrous string of events containing many visits to the emergency room, an unrepaired broken tooth, life changing tragedy, and many legal issues that prevented me from staying at my own school, I journeyed to a new tiny school in the trash can of Los Angeles called Summit View West. Confused, overly optimistic, and determined to start a new, I did my best to start a new reputation; unlike my old one: “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. Because I had Hung out with Jessica (The Nose Picker), Danni (The Sl**), Sarah (The Autistic Girl), and Bella (The Stalker), it didn’t help my situation.…

Would you sing to a cow? How about a goat? Believe it or not, this used to be normal for female Scandinavian shepherds, who called their animals home after grazing in nearby fields all day. After surveying all of the options for my education as a child, my parents chose to send me to a Montessori school in central Chicago. This decision would end up shaping the rest of my life, as it put me in an environment where I could explore my fascination with everything mechanical. This fascination came from an intrinsic desire that I have to understand how things work, so naturally I channeled that interest and the destructive tendencies of a young boy into taking everything apart that I could get my hands on. Once I was introduced to Lego bricks, my passion for everything mechanical only continued to grow. By the time I was around ten years old I was building everything from mechanized octopod walkers to construction equipment.…

Additionally, I enjoy reading fiction, which is based solely on the imagination of others, and writing my own small works of fiction and poems. It’s one of those finicky things that sounds great in theory but, in practice, is actually very difficult. Think about it: Getting out of your comfort zone implies tearing your world apart for the sake of new experiences.…
