Cornell's Personal Statement

Someone once told me the right college is not a prize to be won ,but a match to be made. I wanted a school that inspires students to maximize the value of their education ,a school where being different is looked upon positively. I wanted to place myself in an environment that encourages me to stand out and become something great. That was when I discovered Cornell.

A unique aspect of Cornell’s college of A&S that captivated me was the opportunity given to students to explore the different interests they may have. I’ve chosen lots of areas to study throughout high school, but I’ve always kept changing my mind. Choosing a career is not always based on what someone is greatly passionate about. It can be about the pay rate, the hours or even the environment. Gordon Marino author of "A Life Beyond Do What You Love", published in 2014 in the New York Times, believes that people should not only do what they love but perform something that can benefit society or their families. Mariano is a professor of philosophy, a student advisor and a community volunteer. He began to realize that when advising students, he would always tell them to do what they love even though in reality they did not know what they loved to do.…

Active Listening Assignment A friend came to me with concern over her future career options. She expressed her want of many different career fields that she wished to pursue. This was problematic because if she tried to pursue all of her interests, she would need to attend school for about 8 years and be buried in student debt. Although she knew that she would be unable to pursue all of her possible career paths, she wasn’t sure which she wanted to follow and didn’t want to make the wrong choice.…

The blacker the college, sweeter the knowledge. As kids, we see shows and movies such as A Different World and School Daze then imagine attending an HBCU being fun and adventurous. Not realizing and understanding the essence of having a place in the world where you can relate with people of different shades of melanin and personalities. The mission of an Historically Black College or University is to give blacks the opportunity of higher learning and allow them to graduate with multiple job lineups. From my perspective, an HBCU should make you feel more welcome than a PWI would, make you feel wanted and appreciated.…

For many people which career they want to attend college to work towards comes pretty naturally like teaching has always been their passion or they’ve always loved the feeling of being in a kitchen. Although many people see this as a positive thing, the authors argue that college is not for everyone. Murray discloses that some of those that enter college to get a degree end up dropping out. He attributes this to the fact that “it remains taboo to acknowledge that college is intellectually too demanding for many young people” (251). Murray believes that young people would benefit more if guidance counselors pushed them toward something they were naturally good at as they would enjoy it far more and would excel. Similarly, Owen and Sawhill believe that “a bachelor’s degree is not a smart investment for every student in every circumstance” (222).…

A Change in Perspective Ignorance is bliss — but is it really? In the three years attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, what has plagued my mind the most is whether I am pursuing the right career. The more classes I took and was exposed to, the more knowledge I accumulated, the more I became confused. It was as if the more I learned, the more miserable I was. Perhaps this dilemma torments me more than others because of my natural tendency to want to learn everything.…

One can never tell what he truly wants unless faced with many opportunities and has tried them hard enough. That’s definitely true, from what I have been through. Different from most other students, I didn’t start my accounting study until the second undergraduate year. And that’s exactly the time when I know that I finally find the thing I would devote to. Needless to say, that was quite a phenomenal change both academical and psychological, since the major I used to take was Chinese linguistics and literature.…
