Cornell’s Johnson Museum has been blessed with a collection of a rarer variety. The “From the Dark Sea” exhibit displays a handful of glass invertebrate models created by the celebrated Blaschka family. The creative side of the Blaschka family consisted of Leopold Blaschka and his son, Rudolf. In the 19th and early 20th century, the pair produced blown glass replica of various marine life which they sold to museum and universities around the world. Cornell is one of a few academic institutions that has a collection of these glass recreations on display. Originally used for anything from decor to academic pursuits, these models give insight into the the versatility of glassblowing as a medium and the intersection between art and science. The exhibit itself does great job presenting the topic and it’s corresponding information in tandem.

At the opening there is a large canvas advertising what is perhaps the collection’s most representative piece, Loligo Bianconi, a glass squid with blue rings around its eye and pink dots leading down its mantle. Next to the sign the exhibit appears to break off into a room and seemingly separate long hallway that bleeds into the next exhibit. To best appreciate the lay one should start in the room. Before walking in, the polychromatic light of a tv screen is visible. People are seated on a pair of cushioned seats staring at a screen which displays an older glass smith working on a glass sculpture of a woman. Right at the entrance, you are presented with information that creates context and ensures an appreciation for the art of blown glass. The video details the process of lamp working

The installation leads me to the next story where the exhibitions are on display. I follow the rope to the second floor which exhibits Ida Applebroog’s series Catastrophe with its colors contrasting against blank plaster walls. Each individual piece is drawn on five by two-and-half feet mylar sheets. These have a cream color and are translucent with a matte finish. Applebroog’s consistent style involves simple, curvilinear figures that resemble the abstraction often seen in children sketches.…

Dale Chihuly’s installations do not only appear in Museum’s. Two Chandeliers were set up at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. Dr. Jonas Salk, the founder of the Institute, commissioned Chihuly, because he believed that art and science coincide. These chandeliers were specifically designed to hang between the towers, bordering the courtyard. Each chandelier contained a different color-scheme, but both were vivid colors that could serve as an inspiration to the scientists who worked hard each day.…

When it comes to art made from glass no one stands out more than Dale Chihuly. His art stands out for not only the dazzling design, but also for the aura that it emits. Several people have attempted to describe his work however few have succeeded in their endeavor. For this paper, I am going to look at Linda Norden’s description of Chihuly’s work, a video interview of Chihuly, as well as an article from Clement Greenberg for comparison. From these, one prominent writer, Linda Norden, evaluated Chihuly’s art and argued that his forms extend from nature.…

The South Window of Canterbury Cathedral has long been one of the largest and eldest stained glass windows in existence. A factor that has had an impact on the ongoing restoration process is the high content of potassium oxide in the glass. Its presence renders the window more susceptible to the damages caused by pollutants. This study aims to analyze the making and restoration of the South Window of Canterbury Cathedral in relation to the potassium oxide that contributed to its deterioration. A brief overview of the South Window (fig. 1) reveals that it is located in Canterbury Cathedral, the home of the largest collection of English Medieval stained glass.…

During the first century B.C., the Phoenicians invented glass blowing "in the vicinity of the Palestinian coast" (History of Glass). Used for jewelry, decorative pieces, or vessels, blown glass has been a significant type of glass, having been practiced by numerous cultures across the world. However, glass blowing is a tedious task, requiring "extreme patience, tenacity, and dexterity" and is a long, multi-step process (Sacramento Art Glass). Over time, the difficulty of these numerous steps has lightened with the progression of making blown glass as it has popularized throughout the nations. Although present, this preservation of life isn’t an instant one, as the piece itself appears delicate and almost peaceful in nature. The delicacy of the glass combined with the awe-inspiring composition and size cultivates an idea on the aspects of nature and life in general. Chihuly seems to hint at the idea that life is fragile with the use of glass in his piece. At the same time, Chihuly also purposefully makes the piece very large, around 10 feet in length, in order to bring out his second idea that the concept of nature is a monumental one. Through the grand representation of a natural element that is organically somewhat small, Chihuly calls to attention the vastness of nature on earth.…

Glass Puzzle, a 1973 video performance by Joan Jonas, is a work of recursive introspection. It is simultaneously a video of a performance and a performance of video, using the medium as a form of spatial sculpture. The core elements in the piece consist of Jonas and her doppelganger, Lois Lane, the studio they’re performing in, a swinging bar affixed to the ceiling, their gestures and poses, the camera recording their performance (the active camera), the monitor receiving the projection of that performance, a second camera recording the surface of the monitor (the passive camera), the reflection seen in the monitor of the performance in the studio, light fixtures projecting against backdrops and curtains, shadows caused by the light, and a…

When I signed up to take Stained Glass, I did not know what to expect. I had a vague idea that maybe we would make some glass and solder it together to create a window. I thought it would be an simplistic quick process, but I soon learned that my assumptions were wrong. After finishing my heart, I started to realize that Stained Glass is a very serious and complex artform. However, I did not fully realize the amount of dedication and hard work required to create this art until finishing my first window.…

Before I went to watch glassblowing, I thought that it was just a hobby and it would be almost impossible to make a living off of it. Upon arrival to the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, I realized that this art form has artists that are both doing this for a living and doing this for a hobby. Glassblowing is an art that everyone should know about but many people have never actually witnessed it. I had the honor of observing and interviewing Lino Tagliapietra, who is considered by most to be the greatest living glass blower in the world. He changed the history of glass blowing and impacted people's styles that they use today.…
