I belong to 3 generations agricultural family. It began with my grandfather who grew up in the rural dryland of Thailand. Lahan Sai as they called it, literally mean the city of sand. A son of poor Chinese immigrant, he was the first in the family to go to college to study architecture and civil engineering. More than anyone around him, he understands the value of infrastructure, particularly water distribution system, and the life changing opportunities they provide to farmer. As he rises through the Thai bureaucracy rank to become Secretary of Rural Development, my grandfather led several construction of canals and water reservation systems that help irrigate the arid farmland in his village and throughout the drought prone Northeastern Thailand. Soon after, my father followed his suit by studying applied agriculture to help farmers picking new crops that are suitable for their farmland. With agriculture being responsible for a quarter of GDP and 40 percent of national employment, it is crucial for Thailand to have vibrant and spontaneous agricultural system that can match its international partner.
Cornell is a world renowned university that is not only strong all around in academics, from economics and finance to business and engineering, but it offers much more to students like me. Cornell remain the center of agricultural technology which provides me with the networking opportunities that will help me find internships and jobs, and develop real world expertise in agricultural economic, both from a business and policy perspective. I can explore opportunities spanning from ground up innovation to top down policy
