After reviewing the assigned reading by Corey & Corey on managing ethical issues, I have determined my own concerns and uncertainties. This knowledge has allowed me to explore ethical issues I am most worried about facing as I enter the professional field. By acknowledging these apprehensions, I have had the opportunity to ponder how I might address or deal with various dilemmas. According to the Ethical Issue Inventory section of the text, I have identified my two most pressing issues I am most concerned about. The first contemplation is that “it would be difficult for me to decide when to break confidentiality” (p. 219). I understand that the general rule I should keep in mind is to make decisions based on the priority and well-being of the client. This point is imperative to hold when venturing into sticky situations. However, I would struggle to determine if it was best for me to contain information or ask for the opinion of a colleague. For example, if I was working with a client who had issues tailored more to the expertise of my co-worker, I would have the desire to inquire their perspective on the matter. As aforementioned, I greatly respect the knowledge and expertise that my fellow colleagues hold. Therefore, Corey and Corey may argue that “I often doubt whether I know enough or possess the skills needed to effectively help others” (p.219). I agree with this statement from time to time. Although I feel confident and comfortable going into the field, there is still room for me to question whether or not I am able to fully improve or enhance a client’s situation. I believe this is due to the vast variety of possible problems to address within the helping profession. Each clients’ story is unique and comes with diverse complications.
