She continued to fight for equal rights, determined to keep up her struggle until she succeeded. She continued to make speeches at places around the globe, including the Poor People’s Campaign in Washington D.C. She wrote ten books about her life with Martin, and herself. She helped found The Committee of Sane Nuclear Policy. She also challenged gender prejudice, one saying, “Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, I believe that you must become its soul.” She continued to speak out for gay rights, and believed that you can only have equality if everyone is accepted, sexual preferences put aside. Coretta was also a great mother to her four children. She also campaigned for fifteen years for her husband’s birthday to be turned into a national holiday. She was an activist by her own accord, and didn’t let tragedy or segregation get in the way of her fighting spirit. “I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation." she once said.
Coretta Scott King is easily considered a national hero. She fought for equality for everyone, disregarding what separates them from the rest.
