Social Work Profession and its Core Values and Human Service Experiences
My understanding and personal definition of a social worker is a person with compassion, empathy, and sympathy working to help the well-being of people who are physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged. A real social worker goes above and beyond always upholding the social worker code of ethics. This is the social worker I have embodied, one who incorporates the core values: service, social justice, integrity, and competence. One who understands to provide service to help individuals achieve their utmost potential. It has equipped me to become a MSW social worker. I know patience is one of the qualities I must possess. In the human service profession, patience is a great skill to have. I have taken pieces from my personal life and began to apply patience to my professional life. There are participants with barriers such as housing, employment, substance abuse, or various crisis situations. With patience I am equipped and inclined to process participants for program activities and place the participant in activities that will help their situation. Other qualities I received from personal experience that I can contribute to the human service profession are interpersonal skills, empathy, and sympathy. In the human service profession one must possess these abilities to work with different populations. The participant may not look like me but with interpersonal skills, empathy, and sympathy. It has been one of the best decisions I made. I love to grow and learn. It has helped me not only to understand who I am more but to grow in my profession in human services. My experience in undergrad was exciting and frightening all at the same time. I found myself growing in areas that I did not know I had strength in. Public speaking started off as a weakness but became strength. The more I began to speak in front of people the more I understand how I could help people. My communications class really helped me, now I speaking to participants every day in groups of 20 for Contra Costa County Employment and Human Services Welfare to Work Job Readiness program. The classes I received grade deficiencies in were human factors in technology and college mathematics II . In the classes I received a C-. When I began the human factors in technology course I was transitioning to a new location. During this course, this was a big distraction for me at the time. Now everything in my life is stable no distractions. I have always had problems with math since elementary. When I was told by my academic counselor I would have to complete math I tried everything to improve my grade by getting a tutor and also attending voluntary Saturday class to get help with homework. After taking those courses I think what I could have done to improve my grades was prepare mentally and physically. Making sure my personal
