Core Values Analysis

To begin to complete this personal assessment assignment, I started by evaluating my core values. I attempt to be a fully self-aware person as I live out my day to day life. In doing so, I feel that the main value that I try to constantly live out is to love others always. That previous statement connects multiple of my main values together. I was raised in a Christian home, with my grandfather working as a pastor. Despite growing up in a religious atmosphere, I did not fully practice the Christian faith until 2017, when I went on a five-month mission trip in Belize and Peru. In both countries I resided in during that time, language barriers were prevalent. I found myself in many situations where I could not figure out how to communicate with …show more content…
With being a Human Service Professional, it is important to ensure boundaries are in place. I currently work as a Child Welfare Specialist in Central Illinois. At work, I agree that “the primary purpose of the human services professional is to assist individual and communities to function as effectively as possible in the major domains of living” (Wood, n.d.). Many of my clients are living out common issues that stemmed from broken relationships or repeat similar mistakes they watched their families go through. All clients in this field come into these issues and situations with strengths that can be utilized. My main goal in my work is to emphasize my client’s strengths in ways that also mitigate the reason they became involved. I believe this value could be enhanced to a higher level by bettering my communication skills with clients. I believe that a major way to show others that someone cares for them is by being truly listening to what they have to say and thinking before responding. At this point in time, I have a very hectic schedule. I often find myself running all around and trying to get all things accomplished in the quickest manner. If I slowed down during each contact with my clients and truly listened to what they are feeling, I believe that I would then be able to benefit them as a case worker even …show more content…
I could impose my values onto my clients when talking to them about serious matters: such as end of life decisions, abortions, or discriminatory behaviors. Those examples are topics that I have strong opinions on. “Value imposition refers to counselors directly attempting to influence a client to adopt their values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors” (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2015). I would never intentionally ask my clients to adopt my values, but in conversation it can be difficult to put aside personal views. It is then incredibly crucial to be open-minded in discussions with clients. If conversations begin to become past a point where I could not hold back my viewpoints, I would then need to ask for assistance on how to ethically handle the

The article “Non-Profit News: Easy Ways to Lose Clients and Your Reputation” written by Dr. Warren Corson III was about how certain things, although they may seem insignificant can affect you and your clients in a negative way. An example would be focusing on making money. When a clinician is only focused on making money their clients may feel as if they are a meal ticket. Immediately asking to have clients pay their co-payment and fill out paperwork before asking the clients why they are there, may cause a negative impact on the clients’ perception of the clinician. Setting boundaries teach clients how you want to be treated and setting these boundaries also means it’s up to you to allow or not allow certain treatment. “Boundary rules include the “proper” amount of interpersonal space for various types of interactions (business, professional, service, sales, romantic, familial)” (Sommers-Flanagan 161). Setting boundaries are imperative in counseling because of the trust in the professional relationship and its part of the healing process.…

    a. What effective communication styles and skills have you observed between social workers and clients? How can you learn these skills? I have observed effective communication between a social worker and a client each time I participate in a session with an experienced social worker. I have observed several communication skills on many different occasions including active listening, taking turns, using open ended questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing skills between social workers and clients to name just a few. While sitting in on sessions with my field instructor I often times find myself amazed at her ability to always say the right thing at the right time, to ask the best questions at the best time, and to lead a client to a targeted…

Although counselors offer people with a better insight of their lives, and strategies to help meet certain goals, providing one's own personal views in therapy can lead to undue influences, biases, and ethical concerns because the counselor would be taking away the client's right to make his or her own decisions. One reason counselors should not reveal their own values in therapy is because of personal biases that can lead to improper interventions. For example, if a female client is seeking counseling for help with deciding the best steps to take in an unplanned pregnancy, revealing your personal values about this situation can cause the client to decide based off what you believe, not what is best for her. Counselors also should not reveal personal values in therapy because of ethical issues. For example, if a counselor's patient is religious, and does not share the same values and beliefs as the counselor, this can cause a problem with the quality of care the person receives.…

This leads to another aspect of my professional practice, which is engagement. Even though I may not have a lot of experiences working as a social worker, I can use that to my advantage where I can come in with an open mind to new ideas and even more positive outlook. I find that sometimes social workers or any other helping professionals who have been in the field for a long time tend to stick to the same practices and mindset that can negatively impact clients. For me, I would engage with my clients in open discussions regarding topics like what they are going through, what they like to change, future goals and so forth. By doing this, it helps motivate them to take action in their own life and have a final say without having to rely on a…

I have to focus and give most of my time to school in order to fulfill my goal and receive good grades.
