During my final years as an undergraduate I was introduced to urban studies issues within the classroom context. I was educated about the criminalization of the poor, amongst various topics exploring various degrees of political philosophy addressing reasons for poverty. Given my interest in housing issues in NYC, I was interested in understanding further sub issues within the topic of Housing. These courses began to make sense of what I have seen within my communities, but could not explain.…

Despite a local ordinance that clearly forbids such behavior, the officer felt it would be unethical to make an arrest in that situation unless the homeless person was disturbing the peace. The officer’s supervisors were unsympathetic to his ethical stance, and he was suspended from duty without pay (Gaines, and Miller 17). It is often said that ethics are rules or standards that govern people when a situation arises. Ethics is defined as the moral principles that governs a person’s perception of right and wrong.…

When I originally read this cartoon I quickly skipped over it, wanting to believe that I did not fall into this sociological category. The more comics I read the more it pointed me back towards this cartoon. I soon realized that just like I skipped over this topic without any thought, I tend to do the same with the homeless. I know that we would all like to believe that we do not fall into this societal category and that we have the hearts to recognize the great need for the help that our homeless population displays. Yet we sit around and wait for someone else to do the work for us.…

In an New York Times Opinion article entitled “How to Fight Homelessness,” Mark Levine, a New York City Council member, and Mary Brosnahan, the president of the Coalition for the Homeless, have argued that preventing and eliminating homelessness is largely dependent on addressing its root causes. In particular, they discuss an “epidemic” of evictions as a key reason that growing numbers of individuals and families are being forced onto the streets (Levine & Brosnahan, 2015). They argue that a current piece of legislation on the floor of the New York City Council could substantially reduce “the human cost of homelessness” as well the monetary cost by establishing a right to counsel for all low-income tenants facing eviction in housing court.…
