On a warm fall day, two cops knocked on our door. I called my brother Alex over because he had recently turned 18 and this seemed like an adult matter. I peeked through my family room blinds staring at alex’s clamp wrists in handcuffs. For the first time ever I was scared for my brother.
Changes in emotion: Without warning -I felt different- almost a protective instinct came over me. He looked back at me and said “go get mom”.
Emotions of alex’s head being pushed into cop car:
My mom quickly sent my brother and I out of the house. Sitting at Qdoba surrounded by everyday people eating soggy burrito bowls, I saw a live stream of alex’s head ducking into a police car I accessed through our house security cameras. The …show more content…
After fourteen years of not showing up to anything, I witnessed my dad get involved. He paid my brother’s bail, drove him around after his license was suspended, and helped him with his community service projects. It was truly a out-of-body experience seeing my father “showing up” in a way he hadn’t done before.
Coming together as a family
In the situation, everyone had to be there for Alex. I didn’t care about my parents missing my annual lacrosse banquet to attend his hearing. I didn’t care I had to put someone else’s needs before my own, and it started a transition my to adulthood.
Relationships after:
After going through this experience, my family is different, and so am I. My dad is more engaged and seeks out opportunities to connect with us. My relationship with Alex is different too. He and I grew closer as a result of his 3 day absence.We are essentially each other's best friends. His mindset shifted from partying to taking care of his health and pursuing goods at work. This experience changed the way I saw my options and I found myself more motivated in school. I am proud of what I’ve done and proud that my family will be there to witness what my adult self is capable
