Task-5 a) • Metals Metal structure is made up of crystals of metals which are made up of positive metal ions and these ions are surrounded by a sea of delocalized electrons. To separate these substances from this crystal lattice a lot of energy is needed. In between the positive and negative ions is present a strong electrostatic force of attraction. That is the reason why metals have strong melting and boiling points. In order to slide one layer of the metal ions over the other layer very less amount of energy is used.…
Statement of Problem The Ely Copper Mine was declared a superfund site in 2001. Mining activity occurred from 1821 to 1920 Ore body discovered in 1813 Location The Ely Copper Mine is located in East Central Vermont in the rural town of Vershire, Orange County. The site is part of a region referred to as the Vermont Copper Belt, or the Orange Country copper district. Over 30 miles long, the belt runs in a NNE–SSW direction. The Ely Mine is one of three major mine sites in the region.…
Process To Make Copper Coated / Plated Nails 1) Measure out 1/4 cup white vinegar and put into the glass bowl. 2) Add 1 teaspoon salt. Stir salt until it dissolves in the vinegar. 3) Take a penny and submerge it into the vinegar solution 1/2 way for 10 seconds.…
Alyssa Making Pennies Clean Pennies are shiny when their new, but after time they start to become dull. The one-cent coin was legal tender by the coinage act of 1864 (pennies.org). Abraham Lincoln is on the coin, and was put on the coin in 1909 (pennies.org). The penny was the first U.S. Cent to include the words “in God we trust” (pennies.org). Now how do they become dull and dingy?…
Parana Pine: For the Parana Pine I obtained the published value from a website since the values on the lab sheet didn’t have a values for Parana Pine. Firstly, I calculated my own Young’s Modulus Value with the result got from the tests using the equation for Young’s Modulus in Bending: E= l³/(4bd^3 ) x ( Δw)/( Δx) From using this equation, I achieved 14.44 E/GPa as a value, the published value, was: 11.37 E/GPa found on ‘The Wood Database’. The difference between my results and the Published values is: 3.07, and it was still within the range of the published value. Regarding the accuracy of the test, since this was my first time conducting this type of test, there may have been some mistakes I made that could have affected the results…
In 1792 the currency of the United States penny was developed. The circle shaped structure was twice the size of the current penny as we know today. The penny was the United States first currency and Benjamin Franklin is to thank for that. The penny represents the foundation of our country and shows how much we have grown as a nation. But there has been a lot of controversy on whether or not the penny should be kept due to the fact it cost more to make the penny than it is to use it as currency.…
The purpose of this report and lab was to assist in visualizing the structure of infinitesimally small objects and how they fit together. Normal object fit together similarly to microscopic atoms and experiment 2 exploits this to help understand structure property relationships. The knowledge gained here directly applies to the world as applications of the materials becomes apparent as the properties are explored. Copper…
Introduction An intrauterine device (IUD) is a medical device that gets inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is a small, T-shaped device that has one or two nylon strings hanging down from it. The strings hang out of the lower part of the uterus (cervix) to allow for future IUD removal. There are two types of IUDs available: Copper IUD.…
Percent Copper In Brass Lab Conclusion Emily Oleisky The purpose of this lab was to observe the amount of light a solution absorbs, and use the relationships in the Beer-Lambert Law to determine the quantity of a certain compound within a complex sample. First, the relationships between wavelength, concentration, and absorbance were determined. This lab focused on identifying the absorption of copper in various brass samples, and finding the percent copper in brass. In the first activity of the lab, the scientist was trying to determine the difference in molar absorptivity across various wavelengths of multiple salt solutions.…
Copper ore in Bingham Canyon, which is located 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah was first discovered in 1848 . Later, it shaped to a more developed mining in 1906 and produced higher than 19 million tons which is the largest in any mine history. Originally, it was a mountain 108 years ago and sandstone, quartzite and limestones were the oldest sedimentary rocks here . During construction of the mine, the owner cleaned up all the historic workings and ground water.…
“Periodic Table” by Primo Levi elaborates on the idea that one must make personal sacrifices in order to experience true fulfillment. Throughout the novel, he highlights on the challenges one faces while executing self-serving actions. While working in Milan, Levi withholds romantic feelings for his fellow co-worker, Giulia, due to his lack of taking risks. Rather than pursuing a relationship that would bring happiness for both himself and Giulia, he “[does] not return her embrace” as he fears “her destiny and [his own] would crash off the rails” (118). Ultimately, Levi does not sacrifice the risks of failure to pursue their relationship and is left dissatisfied knowing his missed opportunity.…
But natural chemical reactions do sometimes release native copper, according to Chemicool; this explains why humans have been making things from the metal for at least 8,000 years. People figured out how to smelt copper by about 4500 B.C., further increasing supplies. The next technological leap was creating copper alloys; by adding tin to copper, people…
How can one element change the world? Well if it is an element like copper then it can change our whole world? Copper allowed for early humans to build new weapons which could help civilizations to win or lose in battle. Copper allowed for the modern revolution thanks to the unique qualities it has that other elements do not. Copper allowed for things such as the telephone to make long distance calls and cell phones which allow us as humans to talk wirelessly to people in another country.…
Scientists believe that stars are made of mostly gas, and this gas is made up of many atoms. In the star, the atoms in the gas bang into each other and give off different light depending on the type of atoms. This light from stars enables scientists to figure out the type and amount of atoms they are made of. Knowing the composition of the stars, we can guess how they were formed. Therefore we can see that stars are just atoms (hydrogen) hitting each other producing light.…
The Periodic Table by Primo Levi was very interesting. You could really tell that he had a deep fascination with chemistry. He relates what happens in his life to the chemical elements. Each chapter of the book is named after a chemical element in the periodic table and he relates all of his life. He doesn’t seem to be able to separate his work life and personal life.…
