Collaborative group learning along with the Think-Pair-Share activity can significantly improve critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills as indicated in a study that compared a group of students being administered a Think-Pair-Share teaching method against a group of students engaged in a Non-Think-Pair-Share teaching method (Kaddoura, 2013). The academic performance benefits of cooperative learning have been known for decades because Rober E. Slavin suggested, back in 1980, that students engaged in cooperative learning perform better academically than students learning through traditional lecture methods of instruction; this results are still supported today. In addition, Bruce Joyce …show more content…
Because the students will be required to discuss their findings with the classroom, I ensured that there was at least one student with developed interpersonal skills. Two Latino students are still in the process of developing proficiency in the English language so I ensured that each one of the tables they were assigned to had a Spanish and English bilingual student. Each table will also have one kinesthetic learner. The resulting groups will have a the skills necessary to successfully complete the assignment since the student with the math skills will help the tablemates get on track with their calculations; the kinesthetic learner will set the example of how to carry out the investigation to gather the data required –measurements of height, reshaping the clay, and dropping the balls; the student with interpersonal skills may help to clarify the table discussion and may present the findings; and the bilingual students may help clarify some concepts the English Language Learners may struggle …show more content…
The students will be reminded constantly to handle the balls with care to avoid dropping them on their or somebody else’s feet. The students are required to drop the balls on clay from various heights, but will be asked to drop the balls after they have moved their feet as far away as possible from the impact spot; the clay will prevent the ball from bouncing off the floor and will reduce the likeliness of the ball rolling with enough force to injure anyone. All balls not in use will be kept in the boxes each table will have; this will reduce the number of balls rolling on the floor as they can lead to ankle injuries if students step on them or other injuries if the students trip and fall because of them. All backpacks will be tucked under the desks or placed on chairs to prevent student from stumbling on them while walking around the classroom. The table arrangement shown above allows ample space to the students on either the sides or the middle of the room to carry out the investigation safely. Lastly, the students will be asked to keep away from the bowling balls located at the fron of the classroom and that will hang from the ceiling at the beginning and end of the class
