What do you imagine is the coolest thing about being a counselor? Explain.
Counselors at Kabeyun are constantly surrounded by their job. On most days, from the moment they wake up, trying to get drowsy campers out of beds and onto the Assembly Grounds, to running their activity, and putting those same campers to bed, they have a myriad of daily tasks, each with their own challenges. This is the most fundamental, but “coolest” thing about being a counselor. Although this kind of work is exhausting to many, I imagine it rarely gets tiresome. With a variety of campers comes a variety of personalities, as well as challenges and opportunities within these day-to-day tasks. What could be the temper-tantrum of a Gnat, could also be an opportunity to form a bond with a camper. In short, the coolest thing about being a counselor is the variety and mix of scenarios one could get from the simplest, day-to-day activities.

Being a counselor requires constant attention to a series of moving parts; keeping campers happy and safe, being aware of another camper’s problems (as well as arguments between campers), and keeping their activity, whether in or out of camp, interesting and productive. All of these tasks must be met, on top of the other jobs counselors must perform, such as being “OD” at night or thinking of clever, attention grabbing announcements for activities (which isn’t limited to singing a tennis related spoof of Frozen’s “Let it Go” in the dining hall, or thinking of clever skits to sell the Sunday Activity). Being a counselor is the ultimate form of multitasking. Though not impossible, it certainly can be considered the most challenging aspect of the

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

For the past five summers, I’ve worked at a summer camp as a counselor. I met a wide range of people, from underprivileged children to knowledgeable college students. Not only did I teach campers how to make ice cream and friendship bracelets, I made lifelong connections with many of the other counselors. Camp is where I learned what it meant to be part of a supportive community. Although most of us only see each other during summer, it’s an amazing feeling to come back to such a devoted group of people and work together doing what we…

Cicadas Camp Cornhusker, ‘the happiest place on earth’ as many people call it, including myself. There is so much to see and do, hiking in the thick bristled woods to hear the water crash at Angel's or Devil’s falls, to canoe at Lake Abel where the breeze gives a sense of freedom, and to be around a crazy group of staff members. As staff members, we do a lot of crazy things, for starters we work at a boy scout camp. But whether it’s staying up late to hug a windmill off of camp property of even trying the food combinations that the kitchen has us try, everything is a blast. For me though, my favorite thing to do was to pull pranks on the other guys, especially when it involves the seventeenth anniversary of cicadas.…

This counselor should be prepared not only to counsel clients with their education, but address client’s needs, personal problems, compile reports, and help clients deal with personal issues. The minimal requirement for this career is a master’s degree and the highest is a doctoral degree. This would be a good career choice for me because I possess strong skills needed to succeed in this area, such as: active listening and oral comprehension. I exercise those skills daily in my current career, as a mental health technician.…

When choosing a film to write about, I selected the movie Holes since it was a movie very familiar to me and something I used to enjoy watching as a child. Holes, released in April 18, 2003, is a film written about a young boy, Stanley Yelnats IV, who was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, due to his bad luck and 100-year-old family curse. Having been falsely accused of stealing a famous baseball player’s cleats, Stanley was forced to go to court and instead of being sentenced to serve local time, he was sent to a juvenile correctional camp called camp green lake. This camp was designed for teenage boys who were forced to spend their days digging Holes out in the desert, in what the camp counselors and officials referred to as, “building character.”…

The emergence of contemporary research and training for social justice have progressively expanded, transformed, and revolutionized the counseling field from 2000 to the present (Hunsaker, 2011). This has significant implications for the counseling profession. For example, social justice awareness and advocacy in the counseling field has created an institutionalized alliance to the social justice movement through experts, such as Ratt (2008), Palmer and Parish (2008) addressing the challenges of individual justice and equitable distribution. The result of this is that counselors can generate awareness and teach self-advocacy, thereby empowering clients.…
