Much of what I have learned as a mother has been the result of trial and error, and some things I have simply learned by default. There are many mothers that seem to have it all together, the ones with the well-behaved, high achieving children. The ones whose makeup and outfits are always flawless. Then there are the truly gifted mothers, the children whisperers who never have to raise their voices to get results. My makeup and outfits are not always on fleek as the children say. There are not many days that pass by without me raising my voice either. The media bombards us with images of thots, abusive and negligent mothers on a daily basis we must recognize the mothers who are doing a good job. Even the fictional ones.

The older boys, Andre and Jamal are happy to see their mother after her release. But, the baby boy Hakeem is filled with bitterness because of her absence. When Hakeem challenges Cookie, she doesn’t hesitate to let him know who’s boss. In Hakeem’s case, this entails being beat across the back with a broom in the pilot to this series. While I don’t agree with Cookie’s method in this situation, as mothers we have to demand respect in every situation. It used to be that children were taught to toughen up, to grow a thicker skin, to take everything with a grain of salt and that it is what is. If someone hurt a someone else’s feelings, they should suck it up and deal with it or fix it themselves. Rarely did parent get involved, unless the issue was serious of course, because as kids we were expected to rough it out ourselves and learn how to healthily disagree. My parents and grandparents were taught this way and so were my sister and I. It was understood that things weren’t always going to go our way and that that was okay, and it wasn’t ok to be rude or make a scene because we didn’t like something, we were expected to deal with it and make it as palatable for ourselves as possible without…

The commonly known and used phrase ‘He did it because he likes you’ can be interpreted in many different ways which all don’t demonstrate respectful behaviour. For example, to a girl they may think “I shouldn’t get upset when he insults me” or to a boy “It ok to hurt them if you like them”. We all know that neither of these interpretations are fair. But this is what we are saying to our children. These disrespectful actions may start small, but they will grow.…
