Controversy In Our Society Today

Decent Essays
In our society today, we avoid issues that cause controversy. This may be because we do not want to discuss these issues or we are simply too polite. Silence is an impediment for change, as we need to openly discuss these issues to succeed as a nation. The societal issues our country faces today solved with communication and consideration, not with violence and discrimination. In our world today, you cannot go 24 hours without hearing of a problem concerning race, religion, and other forms of injustice. This is what I want to change about the country that I live in. I want us to settle problems with words instead of violence. I want us to understand each other and to realize that underneath our differences, we are all Americans. The only way

During most controversial topics, people tend to favorite one side without hearing an opposing view. Growing up in a predominantly white high school and college for Kailegh Tinnin and myself, only gave us unanswered questions about our society when it came to racial discussions. Why do we live in a world that acts negative without a discussion when someone disagrees with our opinions? Kailegh had racial slurs directed at her in high school.…

In this day and age who would have figured that this country is still a divided nation. The problem that I seek to address would be people that are different not being accepted. From the very first day of being in this world you are already being pushed into echo chambers and most of our life after it won't be easy to get out of the state of mind like you would a habit. Based on the Different Principle the community prefer to use the veil of ignorance than converse with each other. Compared to Arora saying to lessen or suffering, we will continually choose political equality and the Difference Principle. To conceal our greatest values which we feel we are entitled to have and keep from discussioning so it can stay that way. For instance there have been employees who have fired because they gave their opinions and students who have been suspended just for saying their stance on a topic as well.…

The leader of a shared inquiry discussion is responsible for, not only the interpretive question, but they are also responsible for regulation of the flow of the conversation. The leader should take initiative and challenge the participant’s statements. Whether they are contradictory or unclear is up to the leader and should be challenged whenever possible. The leader should ask for evidence when an answer is given. This opens up further conversation and makes sure those involved are being clear and rational.…

An issue in society right now is, what matters more, what a person thinks or a what a person says. I personally think it only matters what a person does because every person has their own thoughts that we can not control. We have to get to the point where we know that each and every person has their own opinions about certain things to even argue this issue. There is no law that necessarily says that us a society have to agree with everyone. For example the common gun issue.…

With the current political climate in the United States, I definitely feel as though we need to reevaluate the way in which crucial issues are discussed and what kinds of solutions are proposed. I think with the advancement of technology and social media platforms, such as twitter, promoting a civil discourse of important issues has become even more difficult. After reading the article entitled “The Meaning of Civility” by Guy Burgess and Heidi Burgess, I agree with many of their assessments and suggestions on how to improve this situation. First of all, especially in the US, it seems to me that the moment someone mentions they are a Republican or a Democrat, the other party is immediately hostile and skeptical. I think the tension-filled…

It should not be this hard. It should be a no-brainer, however many people continue to be so selfish as to suppress their fellow man to maintain their privilege and status. Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…

Ever since people have communicated, people have wanted to encourage some ideas, while suppressing others. This idea eventually became known as censorship, and was applied by groups of even minimal power all over the world. The merit of censorship has been argued from many different sides, for many different reasons. Much of what censorship is, in our modern world, is a strong group of people depriving others of knowledge, to further the first group 's goals. Although some censorship may be beneficial when it comes to taking maturity into consideration, it is a dangerous thing to contemplate.…
