Controversy About Online Sports Betting

This Frontline investigation piece is about the controversy regarding online fantasy sports betting. Traditionally played seasonally amongst friends and co-workers the game has gone digital and can be played daily with anyone around the world. The Frontline piece focuses on DraftKings and FanDuel two of the largest companies in the fantasy sports game. They make money by taking a cut of the bets placed by users as well as advertisements. The question of the legitimacy of the game occurs whether or not the game should be legal or regulated since gambling is illegal. One of the main interviewees profiled was Bryce Mauro a young college student who uses the site daily. Was a great choice to interview due to his persona of a naive young man. His answers seemed genuine even though it was revealed he spoke to the company prior to the interview. The company did not do well on coaching him which gave the viewer and interviewer a good piece. He did give answers that were in line with another character profiled Matt King the CFO of FanDuel. The two separate interviews showed how much of the rhetoric players like Bryce are being unknowingly manipulated …show more content…

I believe Jon Ronson effectively uses rhetorical strategies in his interview, however, there are flaws as well. In the podcast, “The Spokesperson”, a London reporter, Jon Ronson, uses rhetorical strategies to report a story told by Rachel North. North was a victim of a train bombing that happened in London in 2005. She decided to share what became a controversial story on her blog page about her experiences on the train that day. In his report, Ronson uses rhetorical strategies to sway listeners to believe North’s side of the story.…

The use of ethos, logos and pathos to reinforce his argument that the NFL needs to fix its rules for penalties to stop quarterbacks from getting seriously injured, and to stop other players from not getting in trouble for their own actions. Clark also uses ethos, logos and pathos to further his opinion, that the NFL needs to find a better way to look for illegal plays. In a way, Clark’s use of the rhetorical appeals makes his opinions seem more like facts. He makes the reader feel a certain emotion by his diction. Afterwards he proves he’s not the only with the same argument about the penalties, and gains his credibility for the the facts and arguments he makes with quotes from credible people who the audience would know.…

I live in a world of crazy numbers and fancy acronyms, the world of sabermetrics. Originally defined by Bill James in 1980, sabermetrics is "the search for objective knowledge about baseball", yet the term has grown into much, much more. It appeared to be magic when I first learned about the masses of statistics associated with baseball. I was seven years old when my father started introducing me to his boxes upon boxes of old baseball cards.…
