Nina Hernandez, in “Is the Trans Conversation Changing in Texas”, argues that there is an opportunity in Texas to raise awareness for the trans community. Hernandez supports this argument by first going into detail about the “state-sponsored bullying” that results from the Texas legislation requiring transgender individuals to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate (Hernandez). The author then goes on to use the mayor of New Hope, Texas as an example of a possible win for the transgender community. Recently, in New Hope, Texas, Jess Herbst was chosen to fill the position of mayor, after the previous mayer died of a heart attack. In a “fearless open letter to the town’s residents”, Herbst told of her struggle…

The current event that I choose was the case of Gavin Grimm v. Gloucester County School Board. Grimm is a transgender student from Virginia that was denied the right to use the bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity. Grimm won against the school board in the federal appeals court, but the court ruled the school had to let Grimm used a unisex bathroom that was created for him. Although Gavin won the case, Gavin feels as though it still excludes him from using the bathroom of the gender identity he identifies with. Gavin and his lawyers decided to take the case to the supreme court and let the court decide on which interpretation of Title IX is correct.…

The Supreme Court case that I have decided to research was Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier. Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier was a Supreme Court case that asked the question, “Do schools have the right to revise or change the contents of a student article for privacy or other reasons? And does it infringe their 1st Amendment right?”…

Most bathroom bills that have recently been proposed aim to make sure trans people can only use public bathrooms that match the sex indicated in their birth certificate. This means that a trans woman who was born male will not be allowed to use a female bathroom in a mall or a restaurant. It might seem like too much trouble to go through in an effort to limit a trans person’s use of the bathroom, but…

In her speech “Our Armies Are Rising and We Are Getting Stronger”, to the Latino Gay Men of New York (LGMNY) in 2001, Sylvia Rivera recounted her life in the context of her contribution to transgender activism, specifically that of the Stonewall Riots which took place during the summer of 1969. Throughout her speech Rivera reveals the underlying and persistent marginalization that took place not only on behalf of the cisgender, heteronormative community, but by her own community as well. Just eight months before her death, Rivera’s speech encapsulated a hierarchy of oppression that attacked her from all sides, which is not only reflected through her personal narratives, but also through the memorialization of social movements and the people…

Many Americans ascribe to the belief that America represents a “melting pot” of cultures. With so many differing cultures in this country, America would be expected to have a high bilingual population and large support for bilinguals’ rights. However, America is only about 20% bilingual (source). This low bilingual percentage accounts for Americans’ general lack of empathy for bilingual people and their rights. Two bilingual authors, Martin Espada and Richard Rodriguez, portray contrasting perspectives about the issue of bilingualism in America by addressing the meaning of bilingualism, bilingual education, and discrimination against bilinguals.…

The piece I picked is more opinion oriented and finds itself in the opinion section. Washington Post author Catherine Rampell goes on to say trump seems to have all of our problems figured out, whether it is the debt we are currently in or deporting illegal alien. Although her concern is when it comes to gun control where she is expressing quite a public opinion. Rampell says that Trump takes the traditional conservative stance. Rampell seems to think that though Donald Trump seems to have it all together, he doesn’t for this one.…

An article was written by Michael J. Broyde, published by CNN, and titled “Transgender Bathroom Issue: A Solution?”, gives a synopsis of the issue of letting people go into the bathroom of their identified gender, rather than just their birth gender. The article opens by just explaining how that this topic got into the limelight when the supreme court took up a case of a high school student trying to use a boy’s bathroom, and whether or not that should be allowed (Broyde). Broyde then goes on to explain that in many religions, including his own, using the bathroom is seen as an extreme private time and shouldn’t be shared with anyone regardless of gender. Then, Broyde gives what he believes to be the best solution to this problem is to make…

The article that I have chosen is ‘Unbelievable Turmoil’: Trump’s First Month Leaves Washington Reeling. This article talks about some of the issues that President Trump had encountered in his first month on the job. Some issues that he has had to deal with were his travel ban and firing his acting attorney general. It also voices the concern of a Democrat about President Trumps ability to respond if there was a major crisis that happened.…

The topic of abortion has always been a controversial issue. There are, and will always be, many different views concerning the ethical acceptability, social stigma, and morality of abortion. While there had already been attempts to properly emphasize women’s civil rights in society, it wasn’t until the emergence of a case like Roe v. Wade that brought to the public eye the legal issue of a woman’s right to receive an abortion, as well as her rights as a person and citizen. Even though this case was based more on the legality and right to privacy and personal freedoms, the legal issues surrounding a woman’s right to abortion was the true start of the women’s liberation movement. The Supreme Court’s decision of Roe v. Wade to legalize abortion…

Not washing your hands after going to the bathroom is my biggest pet peeve! Public bathrooms have thousands of germs all around, especially in the stall. It is extremely unsanitary and can take a negative impact on a person’s health to not wash away germs. By washing I mean using soap, not just water because the bubbles in the soap are what trap the germs for them to wash away. One time in the 3rd grade I did not wash my hands for about a week and a half because I wanted to see what would happen, and sure enough I got the flu.…

A law where some men are forced to use the woman’s restroom, and some women are forced to use the men’s restroom. A second law to further help in preventing men from raping women in the women’s restroom. These are not two separate laws, but the two differing opinions on Senate Bill 6. One would expect media outlets to choose the two sides equally, but in fact, these media outlets tend to be neutral towards, or against, Senate Bill 6; the reason being that media outlets are companies, and as companies, want to protect their brand. The most telling fact on the issue is that one of the most conservative news site, Breitbart, has only a very slight slant in favor of the bill.…

President Trump’s Supreme Court Nomination Arguments by the News Media In covering current political events, various news outlets in America are driven by political ideologies, business sponsorships, and ties and connections of individuals or institutions within political spheres. These ideologies help to understand why different newspapers has different explanation on why President chose Neil Gorsuch as his Supreme Court nominee. For example, The Boston Globe article “Approve Gorsuch with a simple majority vote,” by Eric Fehrnstrom claims that president Trump chose Gorsuch to unifies the republican party. On the other hand, the USA Today article “Why Trump chose Neil Gorsuch as his Supreme Court nominee,” David Jackson claims that president…

A waging war between LGBTQ+ advocates and a group of worried general public battle between the passing of the Bathroom Bill. LGBTQ+ advocates see this as an act of discrimination and inequality, as well as a hateful crime towards their identity and comfort, while worried public see it as a gateway for predators to easily prey off the defenseless. I will admit that my mindset is not always the most open on certain issues, but I will say that I am a proponent of freedom. I may ever need to get an abortion, but I respect the right of a person to get one; I may never be a homosexual man, but I do not give a damn, frankly, if they want to be able to get married and be miserable like the rest of us (I kid, I kid); And I may never be transgender, but I do not care where they use the restroom, or if a female who identifies as male uses the mens room (the article specifies how the issue only seems to care about transgender men using the rest room, so this is my counter perspective), it probably is just going to…
