Waldorf Education
The founder of Waldorf education is Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). He is an Austrian scientist and philosophical thinker. After the World War I, Emil Molt, the owner of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory, invite him to establish a school for the children of the worker. Due to the devastation after the World War I, Emil Molt asked Steiner introduce a new approach in education, which would relate to social, economic, and political life of Europe (Rudge, 2008). First principle, respect for children is the fundamental principle of Reggio Emilia. Reggio Emilia believes that teacher should plan the curriculum according to children’s interest and not to expect children follow adult’s idea. Reggio Emilia emphasized on child center, and also believes that children are capable and competent to do anything they want to do. Relationship also one of the main principles of Reggio Emilia. Reggio believes that children conduct in a relationship with the people surrounding, for example like teacher, friend, neighbor and family. This relationship is reciprocal because children will gain knowledge or supported from others. Hundred Languages is the most famous principle of Reggio Emilia. Hundred languages mean variety types of activity used during the lessons, for example, painting, sculpturing and incenting. Children express their thought and feeling in the artistic product they have made. Teacher mainly emphasized children’s aesthetic skills because they want children experience the world through the beauty way or positive way. The last principle is time. Children’s have their own timing to learn knowledge. The time is not interrupted or set by adult. Children have their own sense of time during planning and carrying out any activity or project. The differences between Waldorf and Reggio is play-based approach is focus on play and through the process to gain the knowledge, while project-based approach is focus on provide real-life problem solving for children. Waldorf more emphasized on imagination play and Reggio emphasized the problem solving skills and exploration skills of children.
