Control In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart

No one is in complete control of his or her life and the things that happen can affect a person negatively. Things Fall Apart, a novel by Chinua Achebe, which is set in 1900’s Africa, is about a warrior named Okonkwo who cherishes his village very much but, due to unfortunate events, is exiled. Okonkwo soon returns to find his village has changed because the white men have came and colonized in the village, which leads to his suicide later on in the book. Krik? Krak!, a novel by Edwidge Danticat set in 1900’s Haiti, is a compilation of stories describing the life of Haitians. In both books there are characters who are defeated by forces beyond their control; Okonkwo is exiled from his village in Things Fall Apart, and the narrator in the chapter “Between the Pool and the Gardenias” in Krik? Krak! is arrested because the pool cleaning boy calls the cops on her.
Okonkwo, from Things Fall Apart, is defeated by forces out of his control when he accidentally shoots and kills a clan member, causing him to be exiled for 7 years. This occurs when Okonkwo attends a funeral for his friend, Ogbuefi Ezeudu. In both the novels “Krik? Krak!’ and “Things Fall Apart” have similar connections where the characters are defeated and end up in bad situations. Okonkwo is defeated when he kills a clan member and is exiled. The narrator is defeated when the pool cleaner calls the authorities on her and accuses her of witchcraft. The narrator’s defeat is much worse than Okonkwo’s because the police are sending her to jail where she will die but Okonkwo only has to leave his village.
