By 1750 he wanted to prove that lightning was just another form of electricity. “Franklin began to think about protecting people, buildings, and other structures from lightning. This grew into his idea for the lightning rod.” (“The Franklin Institute”) This shows that the he created the lightning rod in order to help U.S. citizens. Not only did he help protect multiple houses from being struck by lightning he also helped to protect a state house in Maryland. This simple invention was seen as a “…symbol of the ingenuity and independence of a young, thriving nation, as well as the intellect and inventiveness of Benjamin Franklin.” (The Franklin Institute, Pg.
