Contrast Materials In The Body

Improved Essays
Contrast materials, otherwise known as contrast agents or contrast media, are used to get better pictures of the internal part of the body produced by x-rays, CT, MRI, and ultrasound. Frequently, contrast materials permit the radiologist to differentiate normal from abnormal disorders/illnesses. Contrast agents are not tints that forever discolor internal organs. They are substances that for a short period of time change the way x-rays or other imaging devices act together with the body. When put into the body before the beginning of an imaging exam, contrast materials cause certain structures or tissues in the body seem different on the images than they would if no contrast material had been dispensed. By advancing the view of particular organs, blood vessels or tissues, contrast materials aid physicians identify medical …show more content…
The method in which contrast materials go in the body are: orally, rectally, or intravenously. After an imaging exam with contrast material has been done, the substance is absorbed by the body or excreted through the urine or feces. There are numerous kinds of contrast materials, Iodine-composed and barium-sulfate mixtures are used in x-ray and CT imaging exams. Contrast substances can have a chemical structure that contains iodine, an organically occurring chemical element. These contrast substances can be injected into veins or arteries, inside the disks or the liquid filled spaces of the spine, and into other body

When protection the public, patients and the radiation technologists from radiation, shielding is one of the most important factors to consider. However shielding goes beyond just protecting the patient using gonadal shielding. Contractors and hospital staff have three sources of radiation that they must shield. These include scattered radiation from the patient, primary radiation for the x ray beam and leakage radiation from the x ray tube. All x ray tubes have some radiation leakage.…

The most effective device created at the time was the X-ray machine which was brought to French hospitals and handled by highly educated individuals. When these machines were introduced, it was much more efficient than the thorough inspections made by nurses and doctors. For the first time, ruptured organs were able to be located within minutes and treated almost immediately. This reduced the chances of patients bleeding out internally or dying from the failure of a critical organ, such as the kidney. There were also laboratories built for diagnostic testing for more complicated procedures like blood transfusions.…

On the other hand, if your body has mushy tissue, there are less radiation which creates a darker image. The third imaging technology is a CT scans (Computed Tomography), a CT scans is also called a CAT scan and it is similar to X-rays. What’s interesting about a CT scan is that it can use different angles to capture different parts of a human body to get a precise images.…

According to David Richardson, author of Modern Ceramic Engineering, ceramics have been used for medical diagnoses for several years. Most petri dishes, test tubes, and microscopic lenses are created from ceramic glass and plastics. Computed Tomography, or CT, scans use ceramic scintillators to detect the presence of x-rays which have passed through the body, and project an image onto a computer, giving doctors an inside look into a patient’s body. Endoscopes and Ultrasound machines also make use of ceramic material to provide doctors with inside looks into the human body through non-invasive means. In endoscopic surgeries, a flexible tube filled with ceramic optical fibers and a ceramic lens, known as an endoscope, is inserted into to small…

With its ability to remain for hundreds to thousands of years, and with no safe place to store it, it sucks up space and money.
